I GUESS THE 50'S REGISTRY SPECIAL IS NEXT?

With the 60's special ending in the next week I am figuring that the 50's are next. I am curious if they will do anything earlier than the 50's on these specials? If not will they go back to the 70's or do you think they will bother with 80's set specials, 90's set specials, 2000's set specials.Oh the HORROR!!!!!

There's not a plethora of raw, high-grade 50's stuff to submit. It wouldn't be the best marketing strategy for PSA. Going to another sport would make more sense.

True, although it might encourage people to submit lower grade material under the lower cost fees. Did the previous specials only cover baseball or was it open to all sports?

i thought all sports benefited from the specials...doing a 50's special would be silly. maybe a 50's and all pre war issues at the same time. but even then is there that much out there? ...i think 80's would be a logical way to go ....ethan

The '80's should be next. It would be a good introduction for newer members to get involved.

They have added or are adding PSA registry sets from the '80s.
  • Hmmm

I don't think that they will see a flood of material fron the 50's and 80's

How many of you 80's collectors are honestly going to be dropping $6 in grading fees on .10 and .15 cards?

As for the 50's material, it will be mostly lower end (marginal), and certainly not in the quantities of the 60's and 70's submissions.

I for one am hoping for an 80's special.. I have tons of 86-87 fleer bskb and some star issue cards that need grading... and a few 88-89 bskb. The 86 fleer basketball set is quite popular and tho it boasts no fab 5... there are quite a few members building the set. Maybe an 80's/90's special would be better as I am sure lots people are holding on to kobe/carter etc all rookies...
  • i think a 50's set special is a good idea, because with the higher end cards drying up, it may stimulate middle grade submissions, which otherwise would remain ungraded, as for an 80's special, in my opinion all modern card submissions should always be 5-6 dollars, this i believe would stimulate sales growth in this area. with only a finite number of potential gradable material, you have to create opportunities to grade it all, not just high end vintage. otherwise psa will not be around in 20 years.

  • mcdee2- If I'm not mistaken PSA does not grade the STAR Co. cards at this time. I believe there was a thread not to long ago talking about this in length.

Hmmm.. I will have to check into it.. i know they did in the early days.. then didnt due to worries over customer dissatisfaction over illegal copies.. then they decided to do it again.. I shall send an email asking and post the results..

  • If they did a 80/90's set special that would give us vintage collectors some time to replentish our supply of raw cards , and money TOO!!!! I actually think that it may not be bad to do a modern special to keep interest in PSA for the people who collect new stuff. The problem is that there is almost no market for new cards in PSA 8 or lower and some cards are even hard to move in PSA 9. If these people are willing to plunk down $6 to take a chance so be it.

BC, Kurt Engle is cool but not as much as Ric Flair in his heyday !

I have perhaps 20 1957 FB which I might submit to add to my newly registered set, via a special. Also got some mid-range 57 and 58 BB, probably a few 8s in there too. Not all of us have been submitting in droves for the last few years. Because of that and elements you mentioned prior, I hope they do have a 50s special.image

  • I would be surprised if PSA started grading the Star cards again. Since the reprints were printed on the same equipment as the originals, there's no way to tell which ones are real and which ones are reprints.

I'm feeling a Star Wars special to tie in with the just released movie.
  • jaxxr,

how about superstar billy graham and the grand wizard of wrestling. wrestling is so addictive, i never really look for it or schedule it in my tv time, but somehow when i'm surfing i just can't seem to change the channel. and i agree, i have a lot of mid grade 55 bowmans, that i would love to submit if the price is right, if only because so much stuff is trimmed.

I'd like to see a player set special. If you register a player set you could then submit any card of that player for $6/card.

I think a 1950's special would be good to. A lot of the non-mainstream sets, like team issues, have not had a lot of cards submitted.
  • I also think a 50's special would be a great idea I have a complete 54 Bowman set I might submit the entire thing at those prices...... I also think they should have some kind of permanent special in place for complete set submittals ... I mean some sets are 50-60 cards and if I want to submit the entire setThe cheapest price I can get is $10??? Why not offer the $7 bulk submiision price for all complete sets?

I would love to see a 50's an earlier grading special. I think there would be plenty of people sending in cards to have graded particularly cards in the 6-7 range. Although the Star Company thread has been repeated many times, there were few sets that were reprinted. It would be interesting if they did grade them to monitor the number of cards that exist between PSA and SCD.

How about a modern special with >100 cards @ 5 bucks a pop? Doubt it'll happen because there's so many big dealers out there on the newer stuff, but man, cards would be flying then.
  • it's going to be an 80's special at $5 a card for 25+, 30 day turnaround.
Got my July SMR this morning and there is a full page ad for it.

When does the '80s special start?
