eBay returns are to be paid by the seller???

I just got an email from eBay "Updates to the eBay User Agreement"

"Returns and Cancellations: We updated this section to let you know that eBay sellers who choose to offer returns may now enjoy a single, customizable returns process by creating automated rules for returns, refunds, and replacements. When you automate your returns, we'll send an eBay-generated return shipping label to your buyer for you. We also clarified situations where you are responsible for the cost of an eBay-generated shipping label."

Does this mean that if an eBay seller does NOT offer returns and the buyer sends it back anyway (that's another thread, I am sure) the cost of the return is on the buyer?

Seems like eBay is getting worse as the day grows long. image

You can opt out of their return process. The new rules are just not in line with handling coins IMO.
Why give vest pocket dealers a month to shop your coins at shows then return if they don't sell on your dime.

ebay generated return labels do not take into consideration the value of the item nor provide insurance on it. Recently had an $1,800 coin returned with an ebay generated return label and postage was under $4. Not sure what would have happened had return got lost in the mail, but I would surely have argued that ebay failed to properly insure item.

  • A seller defines return rules. For example, when I sell coins I no longer want, I accept returns with buyer paying the return shipping. But by Ebay rules, there are situations where the seller is required to pay the return shipping, such as a damaged item or an item not as described. And here's the rub... Some buyers will exploit this and claim the item isn't as described just to force the seller to pay the return shipping. It can become a very grey area between buyers and sellers.

It appears you have to opt into this requirement by setting up automated rules for return. Simply do not set up automated rules.

I'll pay shipping to get my coins back at the prices they're going for on ebay .
I should be buying there. Coins are cheap , compared to a few years ago.
Buyers wanting to return silver and gold coinage, please do

All a buyer has to do is file not as described whether it is or not, and gets a free return. Theve been doing it, even if they just decide they don't want it or paid to much in the bidding process.

I had a guy flat out tell me he paid to much, let me send it out, then simply returned it NAD, ebay did nothing. I ate the shipping. Block from future bidding is all I can do, and even them you have to be careful , because if you block too early and they find out, they can neg you.

    +1
You got it exactly right !!
The new systems in place completely punish the seller and eBay will continue to lose legitimate sellers ..
I went into details and examples of what the above poster just stated, so no need to explain how ridiculous the new policies are for the seller ..
