Bohemia NEWP

A little out of the range I normally collect, but could fit into German States in a convoluted sort of way, the description is from the auction listing. These always come pretty crude looking, this is the finest of two graded. .

Ferdinand II Kippertaler of 150 Kreuzer 1622-(I) MS62 NGC, Prague mint, KM308. Massive in scale, this low-grade silver crown displays highly-attractive, champagne-toned surfaces that still contain a surprising amount of original mint bloom considering its age. Virtually nonexistent in high grade, this piece features the collared bust of Ferdinand II and crowned imperial eagle with some softness in the legends and slight doubling of the devices--diagnostics which are fairly common to the type.

In 1526 Archduke Ferdinand of Austria became the first of the Austrian Kings of Bohemia. When the Austrian King Ferdinand II of Bohemia began restricting the rights of Protestants they proceeded to elect Frederick V, The Elector Palatinate, King of Bohemia in opposition. These problems led directly to the 30 Years War which started in 1618. The term kippertaler refers to a debased silver content, in 1600 a Taler was valued at 76 Kreuzer but by 1622 the Taler was valued at between 150 (in the case of Bohemia) and as high as 270 Kreuzer in some of the German States.
