1984 Star 101 Authentic or Fake?

I took a chance on this. It looked okay to me but I'm no expert. Dumb bet or do you think it's authentic and unaltered? This is the one card that I said I wanted to buy already grades and wouldn't touch raw but since the prices were running away on me.. bought it anyways

Given the card's condition I'd bet that it's real. The fakes would have been handled much more carefully given the value of the real card by the time the fakes were made (circa 1989/1990 or so?).

All the signs point to it being real.

That's encouraging. I can't wait to get it and send it to bgs. I really hope it gets a number grade. It's the last post 1980 basketball rookie I needed for my rookie card collection. I'm slowly adding the 4 major sports to my none major sport rookie card collection.

+1, just the centering alone leads me to believe it's real. Most of the fakes are centered fairly well, while the originals are frequently off significantly L/R.

The card is on its way to bgs. Hopefully it's authentic. I would be thrilled with a 4 but will take a 3. It's the most expensive card I've subbed so I'm pretty anxious. If psa ever changes their stance on Star cards, then I will definitely cross them.

Chad if you go do a search in the Star Jordan threads you will find a scan of my fake. There were a few people who were able to point out the issues that are generally present.

If my memory serves me there is an issue with the defenders hand and something with the writing on the back.

  • Star didn't reprint this card with the original printing plates.

I've owned that card in a bgs slab and it looked fake. I'm not sure how they can tell the difference.

I just tried searching through a lot of the Star threads and can't find the info. I believe it was Allen who had the Iverson image that had the info. Perhaps you can PM him.

Wow. I think there's a good chance I used to own that card. Really. I traded for one before the basketball card explosion and it was in nearly identical condition.

Any chance you're in Wisconsin? I'm pretty sure I sold mine to a dealer about 30 minutes north of Milwaukee.

    Here are a few ways to tell a fake from an authentic version;

    1) on most fakes Jordan appears to be bald. The clarity of the card is bad and the top of his head is almost white, as if he looks bald.

    2) on the reverse, the abbreviation for the word "rebound" should be capitalized "REB", counterfeits will say "reb".

    3) this last one is difficult to explain... On the reverse, the black line that is directly above the stat totals will run almost all the way to the border to the right, there will only be a small space between the line and the border (as it shows in the example given). On counterfeits this gap is much bigger and much more noticeable. Following that same line to the left (towards the word "totals"), the line will go over one decimal point. On counterfeits it will go all the way over I believe four decimal points, also easy to notice when you know what your looking at.

It's authentic. I was hoping for a 4 but happy it's slabbed. Thsnks for the info regarding the authenticity.

I guess I still do not fully understand the .5 grade. I am glad for you the card is a 3.5 instead of a 3, but if the main point of a .5 grade is the centering, then how could this card be a 3.5? Anyone with half grade experience, please explain. Thanks, Tom

That's not how BGS does it.

BGS rates the 4 sub grades and sort of "averages" them (there's more to it specifically but I'll save the space for now).

A 3.5 overall card grade is probably indicative that the lowest sub grade is a 3 (I'd guess surface or corners or this one). Some of the other subs are higher than that but you generally only get an overall card grade up to half a point higher than the lowest sub grade.

This isn't 100% exact, but it's close enough for the overwhelming majority of BGS cards. There are instances where the overall grade is a full point higher than the lowest sub, but that requires the other 3 subs to be much higher than that sub, so it's doesn't happen a lot.

PSA won't slab these cards...well, unless they're autographed but then it's only for the autograph.

Anyway, CONGRATS OP! Great job - this is a tough card regardless of the grade.

Sorry, one more thing. The half grade bump from PSA is not all about centering. It's also about the sub grades, even though PSA doesn't indicate those on the case.

Half grade bumps on PSA cards are indicative that the card exhibits qualities of the next highest grade but is not enough to fully bump. It's tricky, and the half point cards in PSA are still pretty thin compared to the overall populations, and the pricing is equally tough to determine on the half grades (i.e. they don't split the difference generally, they price close to the lower grade most of the times I've seen).

The spots on the back killed the surface grade which dragged it down to a 3.5. It's not the greatest example but I'm happy to finally add this to my collection. I'm really hoping PSA changes their mind and starts grading these.

Congrats on the pick up. It looks really good in the slab. Yes, too bad on the surface subgrade holding your overall grade down. Still, it is a great card to own in any condition. I do not have one yet and hope to claim one in the future.

Strange that PSA doesn't grade Jordan rookies.

IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED

  • Awesome read here....enjoyed this
  • congrats on the grade and being authentic

I agree. It's not just Jordan that PSA is missing out on Drexler, Isaih, Wilkins, Barkley, Alajuwon, Stockton and Ewing.

    Star Jordan

Congrats to anyone who bought one of these. $18,100 with seven days to go. With what has happened to other cards not surprising but a monster move.

  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭
Wow that is impressive. I don't think my 3.5 will fetch anywhere close to that. I'm just happy to have one in my collection. I love these star rookies. Hopefully someday I can send them to Psa for crossovers.

What a crazy price! Here's mine - bought in 1984 as part of a set for which I paid about $12. Oh, how I wish 11 year old me took a bit better care of this! Oh well - still graded a BVG 7 when I sent it in earlier this year. Just not quite an $18K card.

  • I wish I could have found one back then. I wanted one back in the 90s, but it was some mysterious card that I had only heard about it. It wasn't until last year when I finally got one. I found a nice 8, but I sure wish I had been able to find a 9, especially with the way prices are now.
