Ebay and Paypal question regarding lost item

Quick version of the story. Sold an item on Ebay a few weeks ago and always send it via USPS with insurance. Never had a bad transaction, but on this one a few weeks after shipping it out I get a message from the seller saying they never got the package. I keep my receipts and checked the USPS tracking and show it was delivered on August 17th at 11:01 am at/in mailbox of the buyer. Buyer says he never got the package so I go check with post office and they tell me to have him check on his end. His carrier does not remember the package, so they ask me to file a claim with the post office which I did the other day - have not heard back yet. I provided the buyer with a screen shot showing delivered from USPS with all tracking info and forwarded that info to Ebay as well for the claim.

Buyer emails me the other day saying that on the local news they reported a person who had been going around following UPS trucks... and taking packages from front porches... and says it was probably stolen if he had to guess. Today I go on Paypal and notice that the $181 I received for the item is now pending and out of my account as a refund. I have done everything correctly and provided all information up front to help out, and it appears that I am going to be out the sale now?? Never dealt with this so looking for advice from any on here that have dealt with this and how to handle it? Thank you in advance for the help.

The whole story sounds fishy to me on the buyers part, including the part about the trailing porch thief on the news. And he, waits several weeks to contact you??

If it was delivered to a confirmed paypal address in the buyers zip code, you should prevail. Signature confirmation is not required for a package of that value and as long as tracking number shows it was delivered, you should be fine. Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I agree it sounds fishy, and luckily I have not only the receipt for USPS with insurance but saved the screen shot of the tracking info showing it was delivered 100% no questions asked. I have supplied the post office and Ebay with the information as well with all tracking info with times and dates. My question since I have never dealt with this before is what happens next? I have filed the claim with the post office and sent my info to Ebay when the claim was opened up. Does Paypal take the money out of my account and I have to fight to get it back? When does Ebay ask for my side and info which I can provide with details while the buyer can only claim " I never got it" despite the USPS showing it was delivered. Thank you again for the help.

    KC,

I would upload or provide the tracking number to the paypal claim/case which should be sufficient for paypal to resolve the case in your favor. I believe the funds are held in escrow until the case is resolved. It is standard for paypal to debit your account during this process, I believe, but even if he does a chargeback with his CC, paypal ahould still release the funds to you upon closing the case.

Thx. funny thing is Paypal has yet to contact me, but I have the screen shot from the USPS with every detail of shipping, delivery, dates, and times. Plus I have the email from the buyer stating that the package was probably stolen from the porch. My gut is the person got the box, cracked it open, did not get anything good, and then claimed they never got it.

    KC,

When you log into your paypal account, is there a claim/case you can respond to?

I think your hunch is correct. A buyer expecting a package doesn't wait weeks to contact you. That's simply how long it took him to crack open the box.

Nothing on Paypal, but I was able to get a number to call them and spoke with someone at PP. The rep was very helpful and could not have been any nicer, and told me that based on the info I would have no problem getting the money. First time I have ever dealt with them and very impressed. Thank you again for the help. Of course that money is being saved for unopened purchases in the futureimage

You should be OK. Don't get yourself worked up wondering if buyer is trying to pull a scam. Since you did everything properly, you should prevail.

The story about people stealing mail is completely true. I once lived in a duplex and saw some strange people (a whole family group, including children) on the front porch, as I was getting home from a short trip in the car. First, I thought they were visiting my downstairs neighbors, then I saw them grab the mail from both mailboxes and quickly run to their van and speed off. I chased them for a while (no cel phone) couldn't get a good look at their license # and finally gave up as the chase was getting a little dangerous. I had two kids in the car.

Spoke with the mail carrier the next day and she told me there were not one, but TWO different vehicles seen in the area with occupants stealing mail. One of the things they are/were looking for was blank checks that get mailed out from the bank.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the help and replies. Ebay sent me a note this am saying the case has been closed in my favor and nothing else needs to be done. All feedback has been removed and funds put back in my Paypal account. Appreciate all the help and info from everyone - mainly Tim image

Just to toss in a perspective that every buyer who says they didn't get a package isn't pulling a scam, I had a somewhat similar experience where I was the buyer.

When I looked up the tracking number on a later date, it showed the item had been delivered to my work on a previous Friday. I say later, because I didn't realize it was supposedly delivered that day and didn't find out until later because I left for vacation that day. It is a work address and I had gotten the mail that day and can assure everyone that the package was not in our mail bin. I doubt it would have even fit in the mailbox though as it was 4 starting line-ups and regardless of how it was packaged, it should have been oversized. However, we also didn't get a key for the package bin nor did the postman bring any oversized packages into my office that day. i have had many oversized packages delivered and each were walked into the suite if they didn't fit into the mailbox or package cabinet.

Since I left for vacation and was gone nearly 2 weeks, I didn't discover this package was missing right away and then it took me another week or so before I had time to get to the post office to inquire. In the meantime, I had reached out to the seller to see if by chance the package has been returned for some reason. He indicated it had not and was apologetic, but restated the obvious to me that the tracking number showed it had been delivered. This I already knew. The post office questioned why it took me so long to inquire and I explained that i was out of town initially and then too busy to make it by the PO. They said they would check to see if the regular postman was on or off shift that day and also to see if the person who would have delivered it remembered anything, but on a commercial route that was probably a shot in the dark. Unfortunately they have never reached out to me since for an update and I have written off the package as a loss.

The big difference here is that I don't blame the seller for the package not showing and would certainly not try to file a claim. plus, I figure even if i did try, I would lose because the PO shows it was delivered! i don't know what may have happened, other than the mailman stealing it, but have not had an issue before or since, so it is just one of those mysteries that pisses you off enough to talk about it on a website, but not enough to really worry about it beyond that. I am out around $16 total on the deal, most of which was postage!
