To Open or Not To Open....

Good Evening All,

I drove to the Baseball Card Exchange not too long ago and by the way what a store. Anyhow, it got me thinking about some of the rarer unopened items from the (70s and 80s). Has the prices on that stuff gotten to the point that unless that dream scenario comes true and every card could grade a 10 that it is better to keep in sealed at this point or, for example, are there still gamblers out there that will drop $32K for a 79 OPC Hockey box in hopes of pulling a Gretzky PSA 10?

Slow news day and it seemed like an interesting topic.

I didn't even read your post, just the thread title. Open. Always open. That's my answer no matter what. Packs and boxes were meant to be opened.

    Hiya Paul

I don't have anywhere near what some have here but it's relatively substantial.

    To open or not?

Schrödinger's cat - as long as those cards are inside the pack? They can be considered both 10s and 1s at the same time. Why upset that delicate balance by opening? image

    Side note:

While I was at the National this year - I happened to be at BBCEx booth when a guy came by - planked down 1400 bucks and opened both packs of 86F Bkb. He got zilch. That could've been a nice downpayment on a PSA 9 Jordan.

And talk about inflation? Packs of 86F Bkb have always been expensive but now? 700 bucks? Back in 1993, $1500 got you a PSA 10 Jordan.

Is there a bubble? Quien sabe?

  • I've always thought prices have gone through the roof because people see the high auction prices for 10's and they want to hit it big by getting a box full or people want to buy their childhood back. Two different reasons that both cause people to spend a ton of money.

    have the 86 boxes increased accordingly? when they were 30-35k a mj 9 was 2500...now a 9 is 3700 (to 4500)

A sealed wax box is an unhappy wax box.

If you've been on these boards for a while, you would know from reading countless threads, that the boxes and packs are better off left unopened.

Prices are so high now, you almost can't afford to rip 70's stuff anymore

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I don't know...the pictures other Members have posted showing their incredible wax runs contain some pretty happy & proud looking was boxes.
