56 Mantle - Why is my scan of the card inferior to the scan in the listing?

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Sorry, I couldn't copy the listing from where I bought the card. At any rate, you can see how poor my scan is on my new printer. 1200 dpi setting.

It looks like your scan has the border of the case in perfect focus....but the card is not in focus. Scan setting maybe ?

It's like the card is just far enough away from the glass of the scanner being in the case...

My old scanner made my cards look "fuzzy" my new Epson makes them look sharp as a razor.

  • Maybe your new scanner is lacking the CCD element. CCD stands for: charged coupled device, which is
what a scanner needs to get the depth of focus correct on thicker slabs.

Cheaper scanner sometimes don't have CCD. Some all in one printer/scanner combos also lack that device.

Doug, Thanks for the help in getting that listing shown.

Also, that to everyone for the comments. I did scan another card that was not in a holder, and it looks fine. I guess the fact that the Mantle was in a holder and not directly on the scanner makes a difference. My old scanner was a Canon MP620, and it scanned fine. This one is a Canon MG3520. Guess I should have thought and spent a few more bucks to get a better quality.

  • That difference (on the scanner vs raised slightly in the slab) is CCD. You don't need to spend a lot---just need to get that.
