Off Topic: Texas ref gets hit intentionally

What a despicable play against the ref, following a presumed bad call and ejection of 2 players.

Defensive backs put a 1-2 punch on a ref, that could bring criminal charges. Outrageous.

I saw that yesterday. You have to be a real coward to hit someone in the back like that. They should never be allowed to play football again.

Not only is it cowardice I think there will be legal ramifications. They could've done some serious harm to the official who was caught completely off-guard.
I agree they should be suspended from ever playing high school sports.

def shud have criminal charges......it was blatant....premeditated.....cowards....just stupid

there were tons of crazy college football....the concussed safety lining up on the offensive side of the ball....couple fractured vertebrae (5 in one guy)....a poor high school kid died....thats just what i can quickly recall

I wonder if they acted alone or the coach was in on it? Either way it was a disgusting act.
  • That was just a filthy, filthy thing to do. A coach that would be interested in teaching his players what a man should be would've already came out and kicked the kids off the team. The fact that we haven't heard anything like that yet is almost as sick as the act itself.

The defensive coaching staff and the head coach should be let go as well. If they weren't in on it, then this is a lack of educating their players what is and is not appropriate.

If i'm the referee, I'm seeking damages from a lot of people. Guy gets paid what, $50 for a game and he's getting attacked by children? Parent, coaches, school, district all would be hearing from my new ambulance chaser.

Along a different tangent -- I'm of the opinion that football in public school is not long for this world. The ongoing discovery into the damage that football causes is going to make public districts take a step back and determine if they want the sort of liability the NFL is being saddled with now. Actions like this in a HS football game just accelerate the journey. I think in 20 years that football before college will strictly be a club sport (or played only at well-heeled private schools).

I definately agree that the hit was a completely borderline criminal act, as far as high school football goes I certainly hope that it is never outlawed, we dont need any more babying of American kids, if anything the game of football on all levels has progressed with much needed safety rules and protocalls which is a good thing. I mean where does it stop if you decide to cancel football programs from schools? And how the heck would college football ever get any recruits? You can get hurt in any sport at any time, if a kid wants to play and gets parental approvement and is afforded the very best safety equipment regardless of family income then lets not even think about getting rid of the sport.

IIRC - the catcher lost his scholarship because of that.

I think trying to avoid enabling kids down the path of CTE is not babying.

I agree. That's why I think it will be a club sport and played at private schools. I'm of the opinion that there will come a point in time where the taxpaying public will choose to have their taxes diverted to something other than supporting football in high school.

If they can figure out a way to stop the damage being done, I think this all goes away, but until then -- I think it is coming.

It's not borderline criminal act, it is 100% criminal act. Aggravated(aggravated if they seriously injured the guy) assult and battery with the intent to harm. It's not only the kids faults but the parents and coaches hold some responsibility in this as well. I do feel bad for a coach or parent that tries to teach the right thing and then their kid does something completely stupid like this.

I wonder how those kids feel about themselves now? I would hope completely ashamed and embarassed especially with all the negative attention.

And I agree with the person who said the ref should be suing like crazy. Im not one for foolish lawsuits but this was really bad. The ref probably loves kids sports and loves football. Then a couple of dimwits do something like this to him.

I am sure that at some point, some schools will ban football....its going to be their loss. Kids still need parental approval to play football in high school, so it still becomes a parental issue, although parental responsibility/choice on a number of things seems to be going the way of the dodo as well.

Reminded me of the similar blind side lick that POS Sapp laid on that unsuspecting Green Bay defensive player a few years ago, after the play was over.

I agree with you on Sapp being a pos however, at the time, the hit was legal and done so while the play was live. The recipient of the hit, O-lineman, Chad Clifton even stated "the hit was perfectly legal".

The first thing defensive players are taught is that after a turnover, go after the closest member of the opposite team. It was a vicious hit but football is a vicious game.

Rather than eliminating football from high school, I think a less drastic step would be to institute weight restrictions for the players.

That might work. I read an article some time back where a sports physiologist said that with the size and speed of today's player (he was speaking to the NFL and NCAA) it is impossible to keep people safe. You can lessen the blow on the outside of the head, but the rattling of the brain inside the skull is difficult to mitigate which is where the injuries are most likely to occur.

Oh, also read today that it was an assistant coach that suggested that the referee should pay for their team getting cheated (via ejections). He is currently suspended.

The players involved are also accusing that referee of using racial epithets towards them.
