Anybody out here collect British 3 Pence coins?

I have a bunch that I have had for years. Mostly 20's, 30's and 40's. I have done some research on them and found they go all the way back into the 1600's and most I see listed are not that pricey.

The pops are low and I haven't found any sets on the Registry yet.

So I was just wondering who out here collects them and if so......which time period.

I've got a few as I am thinking about a type set, so far just the Victoria's, George V & VI and Elizabeth.

Not my area of British coinage, but I will offer this advice if you are serious about these... Understand the difference between the Maundy 3d coins and those issued for circulation.

I have noticed that some years in the sets are Maundy and some not. I didn't notice any years that had both.

I haven't decided to do this yet. I will need to get a lot of facts straight first.

Also, I would have BJ create a Complete set starting with the first year in the 1600's to date. Or maybe stopping with the end of silver

I think the registry sets for this denomination are by Monarch

Yes, but I'm sure they could all be strung together to make one complete set.

My Scottish relatives (the older ones) told me they used to bake the old silver "thopney bits" into pies. I can't find any reference in Google though.

I've got a bunch somewhere that lived that life.

Part of the reason for mentioning the 3d Maundy is that there was a significant stretch of time during the reign of George III that silver coins were not issued for circulation. And there were Maundy sets issued that include a 3d- so that becomes your decision whether you want to include those for the sake of completeness

Ive been doing a date run set from 1800-1943(?). Most I have picked out of melt, have bought a few of the earlier ones though. What I would like is to find a proper album to store them in.

I have noticed that during the 1940's they had both silvers and brass 3D's, but it looks like only the brass one's are on the Registry. Will have to check on that with BJ.

Yes, these are my series along with all other minor silver and copper since 1838...Maundy vs. Currency is occasionally quite difficult, but always willing to help (see esp Victoria 1839-1870 and Edward VII).

7Jaguars - I noticed several sets out there by collector "J. Preidis RN" ......... is that you?

No, I have no sets out there. We all beat our chest, but I think I could pretty much lay waste to the Victorian and Edwardian (plus G5 and G6) minor silver series...

Please don't take this the wrong way, but why don't you put your coins out on the Registry. I for one enjoy seeing the sets.

Some people just prefer to keep their collections private. But I've seen a number of 7Jaguars coins in hand and it's a pretty terrific collection, it makes mine look like a bunch of common date culls. image

The Registry Set seems to have a few different schools of thought and I suspect some are reluctant to participate... And I accept whatever decision collectors choose

These are small enough that one might miss them when eating the pie. I guess they'd have to sift things out after it was processed.
