Leaf 1960

It is not hard to put together this 144 card basic set, mainly because it lacks much if any star power. Leaf had to market it's cards with marbles ( similar to what Fleer did later in 1963 with cookies) to get around the Topps player contracts which generally gave Topps the exclusive right to market a players likeness with gum or candy. Neither marbles in 60 or cookies in 63 enticed many kids away from bubble gum.

But, putting together a master set can get a little tougher. The most well known variation to the set is card 25 which can picture either Jim Grant or Brooks Lawrence. Neither is tough. But getting all 3 versions of the Hal Smith card # 58 is very tough. The easy version has his team designation of the Cardinals on the back. But the version with the team name missing is tough, and the version with his prior team blacked out is super tough....and pricey

Plus there are 8 prototype cards with BIG heads compared to the regular issue cards. The prototypes have regular backs but really BIG heads. I only have one of them, the Moryn below. They are very tough and expensive. I think bobsbbcards who posts here has all 8.

The packs with the marbles are getting scarcer as well, especially series 2 packs.

The Schroll and Goth are just recurring print defects, white dots from right shoulder up across face/cap

  • My Dad grew up with John Tsitouris who is in that set. They went to the same High School together until it was shut down. Johnny was a little bit older than my dad.

    Thanx for sharing Al.

When it comes to variations - I defer to you every time! Also Bob of course.

I remember Al Rosen having a "find" of leaf boxes back in the 90s and was selling full boxes in SCD - don't remember what he wanted?

Are the cards prone to being dented by the marble?

I would like the Snider - a PSA 8 is very affordable. Tho, I don't have to have an 8.

I have mentioned - some time down the road - I'm gonna do a Snider run set.
