Want to buy my first Mantle

I have been collecting for 30 years and have never bought a Mickey Mantle card. I just sold $600 worth of extras and want to make the plunge. Which would you suggest. I really like the 54 Bowman and all of his 50s cards.

For $600 i would go for a nice 1956. Could get a PSA 5 for around that price.

Congrats on your sales and consolidating your collection. For his Topps cards, I am a big fan of his 1959 and 1960 issues. You can't go wrong with any of his Bowman cards, I think they all look great too. Be sure to post the card you decide to get.

You can't go wrong here. Every card is unique and you have to find the one that stands out to you. The examples that you mentioned are great including the '54 Bowman. Buyer beware because once you start one Mantle will quickly turn into multiple Mantles. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

Steve, (slum 22) has a beautiful 67 mantle I believe for sale PSA 8 and it's under 600. Very nice consideration...I always buy the best quality for the dollars I have but if it's strictly eye appeal, I personally like a centered 58 or 59.

Mantle has so many gorgeous cards. Here's an example of a 54B that would fit under your budget cap, that hits the eye lovely. Many 54Bs have a a washed out or dingy look, a toned look, if you will. They also come blurry, and have black PD in the blue sky. But a nice one can be hunted down under $600. This was a raw buy of $450, for example and as a touchstone...

DM23HOF is giving you priceless advice on the 1954 Bowman Mickey Mantle. He is right all the way. So is the gent who recommended an EXCELLENT 1956 Topps, easily one of the most heart-moving Mickeys ever created.

Whatever you do friend, take your time. Be extremely picky for what YOU want and like in a card. Particular characteristics abound, and centering is rated too high, I feel. It's important, of course, but strive to find a dazzling piece de resistance---the picture itself. Picture registration, intensity of color, and the lack of print dots or defects on Mickey's face. hat, and the Yankees NY are important to the eye's / mind's appreciation.

So, save your money like a miser until you find a Mickey Mantle that really does it for you. ---Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)

DM has solid advice in this subject, and one thing I would suggest is get the best card for the grade. While grades are important try to find a card that has all of the characteristics of a higher grade, but has one flaw that keeps it below that grade but still has great eye apparel. Also, and to go wrong with a 1956 Mantle - always in demand and it is from his Triple Crown year.

For an idea about cards and grades check out the Clemente rookie post on this page and look at the examples on there. You will see several Clemente rookies in lower grades that are dead centered and have great eye appeal far above their grade. That is what you are looking for in a card. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. The 53 is out of my price range. I have also looked at the 54 Red Heart and the 58 All Star.

    Here is my first Mantle.

Got 8% back with ebay bucks. Have around $450 left. Leaning towards a nice 58 or 59 centered 6 if I can get one. I also love the 61 all star.
