                I second the "I don't understand" notion.

Lots of people would pay more than $20 for a 1989 Upper Deck baseball box. It's a little too modern for my tastes but would probably be a nice rip.

hmmmm, I guess my only thought is that you may be nuts if you think you will be able to buy some of these at any time in your life. don't know about the others but you will never buy an 89 UD box for 20 bucks

Those are probably the prices required to break even on ripping that product.

                +1

Group rip? An 81-83 wax box run for $195 is cheaper than each of those years are currently selling for individually.image

                buying O-Pee-Chee (OPC) baseball
              • I see his point but I think what is missed is the enjoyment or entertainment value of a rip.
Say you pay $225 for an 83 box and you grade just 1 Boggs, 1 Sanberg and 1 Gwynn and let's say you get 2
Psa 9's and one 8. You have maybe $80-100 in value then but you have the fun of the experience that has a major value
If your just doing it for the rip and strictly for monetary gain then most of the time in
The rip and submit game I would imagine you would come up on the short end, IMO

                Good post. Will read again.
              • Yeah, the thrill of the hunt and enjoyment of opening the stuff is indeed a big part of this. Understood. Possible just me (?) but whenever I buy one of those what seems to be an endless supply of boxes like that, with the amped up prices, I pull a Charlie Brown Halloween. You know how he gets rocks instead of candy. Well my submissions are not submissions, I call them suckmissions. image Making it a losing deal each time.
              • I get that too.... That is why I don't do the rip and submit game.... I would
Rather keep the boxes unopened and buy cards already graded or buy lesser prices boxes to rip

30 bucks for a Favre 1991 Stadium Football box: Agree on this one but its a push

Currently Buy it Now $34.95 for a box and PSA 9 Favre is a $30.00 card. Emmitt Smith and Rice in PSA 10 get you $15-$20 each, minus grading fees. $30 is fair for a box

80 bucks for a sealed 1989 Score Football box with all those rookies: Totally agree on this one. This should be a $75-$100 box max

Packs at around $7.00 each is nuts. So much of this product still out there plus the factory sets. Better off paying the $85 for the PSA 10 Aikman and $160 for the Sanders and the other rookies raw in mint for what a box goes for now. You need to hit both Aikman and Sanders in PSA 10 minus grading fees, and you still don't come out even for a box at $275-$285 now. Get Aikman, Sanders, Irvin and Deion ALL in PSA 10 and then you got something, but really what are the chances? And besides Sanders at $$45 and Aikman at $25 PSA 9's go for squat.

10 bucks for a 1990 Leaf Thomas box: Not too much off on this one.

Not much in this set except Thomas I agree. PSA 10 is around $60ish. The entire series 1 and 2 set can be had for under a pair of movie tickets. I think around $25 is the max on this product. Lots of buy and holders on these cases got burned real bad. Boat loads of it still out there.

65 bucks for any 1981-1983 Topps baseball box rack/cello etc : I disagree.

For 1981: PSA 10's are good money right now especially for Hall of Famers. Schmidt, Rose, Carlton, Yount, Brett, Ozzie, Henderson, etc. etc., the yield for 10's I agree is so small per box, but it only takes a few to do well. If you get a Ryan, Rose, Valenzuela or Gibson in a PSA 10, then wow! Now chances are slim, but that is the chance. A very tough set and only a handful go for anything above grading fees in PSA 9. Boxes of these are on fire going between $250-$300. I think that is too high, but your $65 is way to low. $125-$175 is fair I think.

For 1982: Same as above for Hall of Famers in PSA 10. Many more chances of success as 82 is significantly higher yield of 10's. Plus with Ripken 10 in the $600-$700 range now and 9's bringing solid money. 82 has always been a winner for me. Ryan, Rose, Reggie, and a huge amount of HOF's bringing $50 or more and several north of $200 this is a great value. At currently $260 a box, I am a buyer and many other folks are too. This could be a $350 box by next baseball season.

For 1983: Ditto. Far too many 10's in the set to choose from. Even common 10's bring $20 per or more. And come on! Sandberg, Boggs, and Gwynn. Look at the huge gains they have had this year in price!

20 bucks for a 1989 Upper Deck Baseball box : I don't even now how to address this one. GRIFFEY when he hits the Hall of Fame. This will be a $50 raw card for that summer! But I know there is a planet full of this stuff and yes enough for every man, woman and child on earth to have 6 cases each, but hey everyone loves Ken "Grumpy" Junior

Oh thank god (or whatever higher power) A non member of the "I'm pretty Gangsta CU Board Dude SICK " club has replied.

Will give ya the 83 Topps, ok. But come on ! 1989 Upper Deck ? No man..that is definitely a legit 20 buck only box if all knew what went on with this place and still is.
              • pheldaphelda Posts: 207 ✭✭✭
I think with the 89 Upper Deck it is so hit or miss, but on average I give it a fair market value myself of $40. The collation SUCKS with 89 Upper Deck, you can get no Griffey or as many as 8 I have seen in a box. Also there is a sequence, so if you don't get the box from a trustworthy source, you are screwed as it is very easy to search. Boxes selling for $90-$100 is nuts, I agree, but $20 is a little low. The rest of the box, minus the very obscure errors and Griffey is worthless. Randy Johnson barely gets grading fees back. Wait, sounds like I am talking myself into it being a $20 box.

I don't mind having a discussion on the "value" of wax.

The way this one is presented? I'll pass.
