1990's Topps Wax/Foil, Cello question?

I quit buying new baseball cards in about 1992. I am now having trouble figuring out what was actually produced after 1992.

How many years in the 1990's did Topps produce Baseball "Wax Packs" versus "Foil Packs"? Did they create both at the same time? What years in the 1990's did Topps produce baseball Cello packs? I was thinking through 1993.

Any help would be appreciated. I have tried to ask some of the bigger card dealers that same question with no response to date.

Don't hold me to it, because I'm not 100% certain but I believe 1991 was the last traditional wax pack... while 92 and 93 were the same style (same fold and seal) but with cellophane wrappers, 1994 started the foil packs. I'm pretty sure 90 and 91 were the only traditional cello packs they did in the 90s, starting in 92 they only did jumbo packs (while they did have jumbo packs prior as well).

Ya, from a "wax pack" perspective it was 1991.

In 1992 they used different wrappers and removed the gum.

1989-1991? (I think 91, but I know 89 and 90) there are at least two different packs (of the 36 packs per box variety).

One is the normal wax pack, the other is a cello-type pack -- closer to the newer style packs.

Yup, they did it in 1991 as well. I have a few boxes. The boxes were factory sealed in cellophane as well. The box in that ebay listing has been opened.

    Arthur,

Are the '91 boxes wider than the normal wax boxes like the '90 and '89 boxes?

  • I have seen Topps Wax packs for sale up through 1994, but not sure if they made "Wax Packs", after that time. The PSA registry has a category for Topps Wax 1990-1999. Not sure if that even exists. They also have Topps Cello Packs 1990-1999. I have Cellos through 1993, but not sure if there is anything after 1993.

I have pictures of some of these packs, but can't figure out how to load them onto this thread.

Yes, they're the exact same size as the Test pack boxes from '89 and '90. I thought I had pics of them but I don't and they're buried in a box somewhere. The next time I dig them out I'll take some pictures. I've got around 20 packs from 1990 but no full boxes. The few sellers that have them usually play the whole "these are the Thomas NNOF packs!" game and try to sell them for $500+ so I never picked one up.

For those that don't know, the easiest way to tell the difference (since the boxes should be cello-wrapped) is by the price tag. The boxes look like cello boxes but the price on the perforated cardboard tag says $0.45 or $0.50 instead of the usual cello price (which I believe was around $0.89 in 1989 and $0.99 in 1991.

Thanks for the reply -- I'd been curious about this.

I got my 90s from Steve a few years back in an ebay auction -- you might email Steve/Rick and see if they have any in stock that just aren't listed.
