Time to Roll the Dice... (Contest) **Update - Results are in

I am sending these cards off tomorrow to get reviewed. I really think I have a strong shot with some of these. Actually I think some are a lock for a bump. Hopefully the PSA reviewer on that day feels the same. I have always tried to purchase high end looking cards and these right here I have always felt were great candidates. But I thought I would try and make this a little fun with a little giveaway as for everyone loves to get something for nothing.

Guess the cards that you think will bump (include the grade for each to narrow down the winner). If you do not think it will bump, then just leave it at the current grade. Who know, maybe none will bump - but to not get a single one would be a crime (*Cough* DiMaggio *cough*)

1st Place winner will get a Jose Canseco 1986 Topps PSA 10
2nd Place will receive a minty fresh 1989 Donruss Wax box

Grades should come back quickly as these will be submitted within a 2-5 day review. Once I get the grades, I will post the results and announce the winners.

Good luck to you and of course to me image

Marc~

Dnice, those are some outstanding cards for the grades.

    CURRENT GRADES:

Roger Maris 1962 PSA 8 (no bump because the line you can see on the bottom left and also some light snow in the upper left) I'm not that familiar with this card so they may all have this.
Joe DiMaggio 1939 PSA 8 (8.5 looks to be a very strong possibility)
Willie Mays 1956 PSA 8 (a longshot because it looks to have some discoloration on the bottom left corner area). Strong corners and centering might just carry it to a bump.
Roger Maris 1961 PSA 8.5 (the upper left corner has noticeable corner damage compared to the other 3 corners so I'm not sure they would bump it to a 9).
Roger Maris 1959 PSA 8.5 (Looks like a great candidate for a bump to a 9 with strong corners and centering)

Just my 2 cents for what it is worth. Good luck and look forward to seeing the results.

Marc, these are all very strong cards. I agree that the DiMaggio will bump, plus I think one more will. It is so strong. Here are my results:

    Roger Maris 1962 PSA 8
Joe DiMaggio 1939 PSA 8.5 (I hope it bumps to a 9, but I think it comes back an 8.5)
    Willie Mays 1956 PSA 8
    Roger Maris 1961 PSA 8.5
Roger Maris 1959 PSA 9 (truly awesome card)

    Thanks for the contest!

Edited to add bump on the 1959.

Cards are just blazing. I think there's smoke coming off a few of them.

I think the 62 Maris and the DiMaggio bump half point each.

The only one I don't think has a shot is the Mays.

    Good Luck.

I think you'll get a couple of bumps but for simplicity of my guess for the contest I'll say they all come back the same grade.

Great cards. Not sure you will see 50% bumpage. I think Joe D and 59 Maris have best chances.

    Good luck.

    First...

    Very nice cards!

1962 Maris...no bump (stray green ink on forearms) psa-8
    1939 DiMaggio...easily bumps (maybe even to a 9) psa-8.5
1956 Mays...if not for the mark in lower left corner...it would bump. psa-8
    1961 Maris...No speck...it bumps. psa-9
1959 Maris...beautiful registration (image of Maris exceptionally sharp)...offsets top to bottom centering and bumps. psa-9

3/5 (joltin joe as well as 59 and 61 Maris bump)

  • Thanks for all the replies and feedback so far. Pretty interesting to say the least on what you guys think will bump. Seems all agree that the Joe D will which would be a huge chunk of change in price but I hope the 61 Maris jumps but I REALLY would love to own the second 62 Maris 8.5. First and only 8.5 is owned by another board member here. By all means, keep dissecting these cards. I don't mind at all.

if not for white speck in background...it too would bump. psa-8.5

Thats actually not on the card. I was going to re-scan it but I was in a bit of a hurry. But that little white speck at his eye level on the left of the card is again - NOT on the card. Everything else on it and on the other cards is accurate.

I had a chance to buy the 62 Maris psa-8.5 for $7500 from a guy in Michigan...I said I needed to think it over during the night. Oh well...by morning "Clockworkangel" swooped in and bought it. I am hoping someday he will sell it.

If the top corners on the 62 Maris were identical to the bottom ones, that'd be an easy 9. Maybe 10. I like the 61 Maris for a bump, that's a very tough card. All of them could bump and I hope they do, they are stunning!

I say the 62 Maris bumps to 8.5 and the others stay the same.

    Beautiful cards!
Always looking for vintage wax boxes!
  • Nope. Nothing yet. They were received last Wednesday. Logged in this Monday and now waiting under express. Hoping they pop before the weekend comes but expecting by Monday the latest. I will certainly update this thread once I find out.
  • So PSA didn't agree with most of us on these and gave NO bumps on any of these cards. I was extremely disappointed to say the least and even contacted Joe O himself to see about taking a second look at that Joe D which they were nice enough to do at least. The reason they gave me I thought was so subjective. Anywho...

So with that being said, the winners are dennis07 and HAMMERFAN44. Congrats to you both.

I will be reaching out to the both of you shortly.

Thanks to everyone who played along. Really blows but it is what it is at the end of the day.
  • jmaciujmaciu Posts: 1,289 ✭✭✭
Marc, no matter the outcome, those cards are all off-the-charts!
  • What was the reason PSA gave for not bumping the Joe D?
  • seebelowseebelow Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭
sorry to hear that. comparing the joey d 8 to the others, id take the joey and think i got away with robbery. i don't know the price difference if it were to bump a half or whole point but that may decide if i try for another set of eyes.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

Sure makes me think that by comparison the one who got away with robbery is the guy who owns the PSA 8 Joey D that is listed on ebay right now, if the 8 owned by the OP here is also an 8.

I can't believe the DiMaggio didn't bump. I am not a big player in the bump game but I would probably try again and see what happens. That is a sweet card. Good luck.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

Personally I'd never send it in again on principle. Ultimately as Jeff Lebowski would say, "Hey, that's just like, their opinion, man."
