Can I have opinions on the centering of this card?

I might put it in the 99 percentile. I have not seen an overall better one.

L/R: I don't think I have seen better.
T/B: To me it seems a little off center to the bottom.

I don't know this card well enough to rank it in comparison to other Gem 10's. I will say this, to my eye it seems a little bit bottom heavy (not off by a lot though). I also feel as though there is a little bit of tilt to the centering. I realize that the card itself is tilted in the slab. But when I look at the LR centering at the bottom where the card is framed the left edge has more white beyond the brown than the right edge. If you compare the top of the card where the green frame is, the white is more equal than the bottom.

Does appear to be a slight tilt, but I believe the effect is magnified because the card is sitting askew in the holder. Needs a tap to set it upright.

Good eye. I also think that the position in the holder is creating a tilt. Perhaps you can contact the seller and ask for another scan? This is a POP 351 card so if it doesn't check out you can move on and find another one to your liking.

    Good luck.

looks perfect and I don't see a tilt at all other then the way it is sitting in the holder, not the card

Does have a slight tilt, seems to be stronger on left side but I don't feel it's enough to take away from the overall eye appeal.
Card looks great, I'd like to own it.

Beautiful card - does seem to be a slight tilt.

For anyone that replies I would appreciate any comments include whether for eye appeal this card is in the 99 percentile.

That is really how I will decide whether to buy this card.

Not sure how you quantify that. I evaluate cards based on whether I would buy it or not. I like this card and would pull the trigger if the price is right.

The card is beautiful. I quantify centering by taking a quick glance on all of the edges for about 3-4 seconds. If I don't notice anything at first glance, it's a beauty. If I really have to focus to notify the centering or the tilt, I still buy. If someone backs off this card because of the very very minor tilt, then good luck buying any cards....

If I were a Gwynn fan or just wanted a Gwynn PSA 10 RC I'd have no problems buying this for myself. if I'm asked whether or not I think this is in some fictional "99th percentile" forget it. Not worth the trouble, figure it for yourself if you'll be happy with it. Your problem, not another collectors issue there.

Looks nearly perfectly centered to me. Top border makes it seem to be tilted more than it is because of the green line being offset. If you compare the middle of card at top and bottom, it looks 50/50 to me, side to side looks nearly perfect, maybe 1-2% to the right.

I am not an expert on this card, but I don't see how you could get much better.

I agree with this statement completely. The reason I brought up the tilt is because I do believe it has a little tilt and you asked specifically for opinions on the centering. That said, the card's centering is more than worthy of a 10. And, if I were in the market for this card, I would have absolutely no problem buying it if the price was right. I think you will have a hard time getting people to say this card is in the 99th percentile of eye appeal, as we would be attempting to quantify a qualitative measure. As others have said, if you like the card pull the trigger, it is worthy of a 10 and if it looks good to you that should matter more than whether it is in the 94th or 99th percentile. Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Hiya Kevin

In the world of 83Ts? That's about as nice as they come.

The card "tilted" in the holder is throwing off my eye a bit - but the total visual appeal is there for me. All the ones I pulled from vending were OC city!

I do think there's a big premium on the 10. I would be really happy with a 9 centered 50/50.

The pop on them is high at 351 and counting.

edit: I just took out my pixel ruler - and it "is" a bit off - the top left border is a bit narrower than the bottom left border - and I don't think I would pay over 700 for it?

I would buy the card if I personally liked it and would not worry if it is in the 99%, 98%.... Key question is do you like the card and the price for the grades on something that new I would be happy with a 9 and use the saved money for other cards. I would pay $50 and get a nice 9 versus $500 for 10.

    That was my thinking Keith - and I wasn't familiar - so I looked up what they're getting for a 10 - it's over 700 bucks.

The responses have been really helpful.

It looks like we have a battle of the 1983 Tony Gwynns. Here is another one.

I am seeing a slight tilt. Does anyone agree or disagree?

Is it better than the 1st one?

Unless it's the scan, the first Gwynn has superior registration.

Is the 1st card a 4 sharp corners auction?? I am of the opinion that if they have a card with a tilt to it, they will take the photo of the card in the case like this Gwynn to try and make any tilt not so noticeable. This Gwynn might have the slightest of tilts, but it does not distract from the card IMO.
  • KendallCatKendallCat Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭✭✭
Second one seems or have some very small print dots on it unless it is your scanner so I would go with the first one. They are both nice cards so I don't think you can go wrong.
  • Normally I wouldn't say anything because it really is a nice card but since you're asking opinions on it, I will say that there is more white on the bottom than the top. Otherwise, sides look great and I don't see a tilt and if there is, it's barely noticeable I guess since I am not catching it.
  • In your case I would pass. You seem to have some doubts, everytime you look at the card it will bug you a little bit.
