card looks legit, he's also got a hulk issue #1 - that's a hefty mag!

you're worried about the seller and delivery, not the product right?

Cool! A grandma that had a Psa graded Mantle. That's not suspicious at all lol

100% the seller and a lifted scan.

hulk wasn't there, but seems like they are going for just about every genre:

    rolex
    mantle
    hulk comic

what's next? guessing a coin of some sort...

    one cool grandma if not.
  • They are now offering a 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth too!

I don't really get how this scam works if you pay with PayPal. Are you only protected up to a certain dollar amount? Seems like if you never get the card or the card is fake then you just return it through PayPal. I could be way off. I only had to deal with a return once and was easy from the buyers perspective.
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here
  • The primary scam is to try to get people to make offers and agree to an off eBay deal. Then, to ask for payment with cash/MO/gift payment.

correct. but i really think they are scamming ebay/paypal. consumers usually get refunded, i think it's the companies taking the hits?

granted it's a pain to go thru the process, but they are even shipping out UPS packages to the same town (completely random address) so it shows delivered...

    then the funds get released.

your case get's auto denied because of the tracking and shows delivered.

then you have to call back in, request fraud manager, give them the address it actually went to, blah, blah, blah

by this amount of time, the scammer is loooong gone.

it just happened to another board member here and took about a week+ or so to finally get ironed out.

happened to me a few months ago, but i was pretty sure it was sketchy to begin w/ and knew the process so only took me a few days to get refunded...

it's a brilliant scam, really. feed's on customer initially relying on the auto/online "item not rec'vd" case and on ebays auto "item delivered" system.

stalls it out just long enough to do the getaway.

"Hello, I traded this card with a close friend for a few items I have no more scans but these to do more I will have to go to my safe deposit box and grab the card first. As far as price you could make me an offer if you'd like"

    sounds legit! image

That's just weak. What a scammer.
Perhaps tell the seller you also have a safe deposit box in Newport, NC that contains a few items he might be interested in trading for in person at the bank.

Tell him it's too good to pass up, you'll fly to Arkansas and meet him to deliver the deposit and fly back with him to pick it up, of course you'll need his flight and hotel info image..

Maybe respond back that you could trade your "upcoming" inheritance that is ready to be sent from Nigeria, you get the card, he gets to keep the money, all he needs to do is provide some basic information! image

Or mention you have a relative working at the FBI office in Morehead City that will be in Newport on Friday to check it out with cash in hand!
Ken - Volunteered to work in Florida Keys, now freezing in Ohio
Work in progress - Unopened Racks/Cello/Wax with star power for Baseball, Football and Basketball
Collecting unopened 80's boxes and graded packs
I may be hoarding too much 80's junk wax but I like it!

Friday? Oh man, the day after the auction ends. What luck. You have a tough decision to make.

Edit: The seller has a Ruth goudey ending this weekend. Someone should ask for additional scans of that. They'll be back Friday so no scheduling problems. I'd do it myself but it should probably be from someone who has paid over $10 for something this year.

Does it do us any good to report these as fraudulent listings on ebay?
  • begsu1013begsu1013 Posts: 1,943 ✭✭
item yanked. rec'vd message from ebay below:

    Hello,

Our records show that you recently contacted or received messages from igotonetoo through eBay's messaging system. This account was recently found to have been accessed by an unauthorized third party, who may have used the account in an attempt to defraud other members.

We've taken action to restore this account to the original owner, but wanted to let you know to be suspicious of any communication you may have received from them. Nothing is wrong with your account at this time ? this message is just being sent as a precaution. If you have received any messages from that appears suspicious, please feel free to forward them to us at spoof@ebay.com for review.

    -- Safety Tips --
-- Don't respond to the sender, through either eBay or your email provider, if the message is an offer to buy or sell an item. This type of offer may be fraudulent, and the transaction won't be covered by eBay protection programs.

    - - If you received what appears to be a Second Chance Offer for an item you recently bid on, and it appears in My Messages with the subject of "Message from eBay Member," it isn't a legitimate Second Chance Offer.

Real Second Chance Offers appear in My Messages with a blue background and subject that says, "eBay Second Chance Offer for Item...". Always check for both the blue background in My Messages and the subject line of "eBay Second Chance Offer for Item?" when responding to a Second Chance Offer.

-- Never pay for your eBay items using instant cash wire transfer services such as Western Union or MoneyGram. It is against eBay's Safe Payments Policy for a seller to request payment with these methods, as these types of payments are unsafe if you're paying someone you don't know.

-- If You've Already Sent Payment or Shipped an Item --
    - - If you already sent payment for an off-eBay transaction, or if you're a seller who already shipped an item to a fraudulent buyer, we suggest you take the following steps:

-- Contact the payment service you used to make the purchase. If you paid by credit card, most card issuers provide consumer protections in instances of online fraud.

    - - If you sold and shipped an item to a fraudulent buyer, contact the carrier you used to ship the item. You might be able to receive additional assistance from the shipping service. If it was sent through the United States Postal Service, you may want to file mail fraud charges. Please go to:
    http://www.usps.gov/websites/depart/inspect/

    - - Report the fraudulent buyer or seller both to law enforcement officials in your area, and in the area where the buyer or seller lives. To find law enforcement agencies by area, please visit:
    http://www.usacops.com

When you contact a law enforcement officer, please explain the following:

    - eBay will be happy to help with the officer's investigation.
    - For more information on how the officer can contact eBay, go to:
    http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/law_enforcement.html

-- You may also want to file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The IC3 is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. The IC3 will review complaints and refer information to the appropriate local, state, or federal agency. To file a complaint with the IC3, please go to:
    http://www.ic3.gov/

We also need you to take a few minutes to provide more information related to the transaction. The information you provide will allow us to work more effectively with law enforcement should an investigation occur. Please go to:
    http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/transactions-outside-eBay.html

Click the "Item Bought Outside of eBay" or "Item Sold Outside of eBay" link.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

    Thanks,

    eBay
