One more person's National experience

I don't post very often, partly because I feel like my card collection and card knowledge isn't as great as many that post here. However I realized if everyone thought that way, we wouldn't have anything to read, so here goes. This was my 4th National having been to the last 3 in Chicago and last year in Cleveland. I was there 3 days and enjoyed meeting/seeing many of the posters here. My wife Joined me on Saturday and actually enjoys going for one day, but that is her limit. She also went a day with me last year. This year her hilight was meeting Dwier Brown. (Sorry CPAMike, but seeing you again didn't win.) Dwier is the actor that played John Kinsella in Field of Dreams. He has a book out now titled If You Build It and he was there selling, autographing and talking to everyone. He still looks about the same as he did 26 years ago in the movie. My wife had tears in her eyes and explained to him that she cries every time at the end of the movie and seeing him just reminded her of the ending as he is only in the movie for the last 5 minutes. He told us stories about making the movie and we probably talked for 15 minutes. When we were driving home on Saturday and recapping the visit, we realized that in all of our excitement with him, we didn't pay him for the book. (We since went online and found him through facebook to pay him.)
Speaking of Field of Dreams, in Love of the Game's current auction, there is a postcard signed by Moonlight Graham. Love of the Game had the postcard on display and if you are interested you can go to their auction and read the history of the postcard. Very interesting. As you can tell by the quote at the bottom of my signature, I'm a huge Field of Dreams fan.
Now on to some cards. When I was there on Thursday I went to BBCE at 2:30 to meet the guys and I found this card in Steve's case so I had to buy it.

My next find of the weekend included this 1974 Topps Puzzle with wrapper.

Last of my Gibson's, I found the 1974 Topps Deckle - white back variation as well as the 1974 Topps Deckle - white back proof.

I also added this to my 1971 Topps Greatest Moments set. I now only need Bill Melton to complete the set.

That's my recap. For those that have never been, I really do encourage you to go at least once. If you go once, you won't want it to be your last.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>Thanks for sharing your experience. NO COLLECTION is too small to share with fellow collectors!!! >>
Certainly true! (I hope). And don't kid yourself, those '74 Deckle white backs are a MAJOR score!!

I completely agree with this statement.
Love the Gibson items you came home with! I have never seen a 1974 Topps Deckle card before - very interesting set.
Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

Your post was great along with all those pickups. You should post a lot more often.
Steve always has something surprising in his cases so it doesn't surprise me that you found that 1969 Topps Super Gibson. And I actually thought about picking up the Seaver 1974 Topps Puzzle with the wrapper. Did he only have the one wrapper or multiples as I only recall seeing the one?
I know Atlantic City may be tough for you, but if not, I'll definitely see you in Chicago again.

Collecting:
Any unopened Baseball cello and rack packs and boxes from the 1970's and early 1980s.
I saw all those 69 Super's at the BBCE table. Those are great looking cards. Congrats on some great new additions.
I collect: 80’s Rookies and 86 Fleer Basketball

Hiya Kevin - I remember a quote in an old All in the Family episode where a "challenged" person had a plaque that read: "everyone is my superior in that I may learn from them."
I think that captures it for me and relating with people here.
But, I have to say, I lurked for 2 years back in 2002/3 because I was so afraid to post - then in Dec of 2003 - I decided to jump in and signed up in 2004 Jan.
It was the best decision I ever made!
Those are super pickups from the National.
I was stationed in St Louis in 1985, and I was with a friend at the Mercedes dealership and we met Gibson - he had a vintage Mercedes that said "Gibson" on the tag.
And, I'll never forget the 1968 WS.
Congratulations on your pickups.
<< <i>Edited because some people thought I was poking fun at the OP, which I was definitely not doing. >>
I knew who you were mocking; i'm not stupid (sensitive maybe but not stupid )

<< <i>Thanks guys. All of the CU members I've met both here and in person have been great. One more story from last Saturday. I was sitting at PSA and a guy sits down next to me and asks the rep how much it costs to have a card reviewed. The man told him it depends on the value of the card. The customer answers 40k. I look over and there sits 52 Mantle PSA 8. There is amazing stuff everywhere at the national! >>
he meant $400K nowadays!

My typo. He said 400k.

Reminds me of Married with Children.
Is that 400 "Kelly" bucks?
