As always, a great time reconnecting with friends from the boards. Had a wonderful dinner with Bobby, Matt and Mike at Gibson's. A star-studded evening: Frank Robinson was one table over, Lawrence Taylor was in the bar and Mike Eruzione passed by our window. PSA Luncheon and Net54 reception were fun as well.
And of course I spent all of my cash on these six cards:
First table I stopped at and I saw a card I had to have. Dihigo was one of the greats, a terrific pitcher AND hitter. This is my second playing-days card of a Negro Leaguer. Although the technical grade is accurate (because of the scuffing on the left & right), I love the image, corners and centering.
These three T206s I picked-up from two different dealers.
And finally the two biggies. To be honest, I thought I'd eventually own these in at least PSA 6 but even mid-grades are soaring out of reach (for me) at this point. I was happy to be able to add these to my collection in decent-looking "5's".
As I usually do, I hustled over to PSA as soon as I got in for the Sneak Peak on Wednesday afternoon to renew my membership and drop-off my dozen freebie submissions. However, for the first time at any of the Nationals I've attended (and I've been to the last 7 straight) they weren't ready for me to pick-up before I left the convention center at close-of-show on Friday evening (they blamed a huge volume of 2-hour subs) and I was flying home on Saturday morning. Thankfully, Eric (thosebackpages) was gracious enough to agree to pick them up from the PSA booth and ship them to me, otherwise I would have had to wait at least two more weeks for PSA to do so.
Eric priority-mailed them to me on Monday and I rec'd the box on Wednesday. It took a helluva lot of will-power not to look up the grades online while they were in transit, but I'm glad I didn't! That evening when I got home with box-in-hand, I poured myself some Johnny Walker Black and leisurely, with great anticipation, opened the package.
I had submitted 4 cards for review, 1 raw, and 7 cross-overs (2 BVG and 5 SGC). My track-record with reviews hasn't been very good, less than 10% have bumped, and all 3 were "8s" that went to "8.5". Well I was thrilled to get my first full-point bump this time:
The raw card was a Mays auto I pulled (as a redemption) from last year's Heritage. My HOF auto sets have an 8.5 Mays so this is an upgrade and keeper.
The cross-overs (all '74 & '78 Laughlin "Black Stars") were risky, and in fact I'd never successfully crossed any card to the equivalent PSA grade. Until now. Two BVG 9s came back 8.5s, one SGC 92 came back an 8 but the other SGC 92 crossed to 8.5 and all three SGC 96s ended up in PSA 9 holders. The two biggest cards are below. The Taylor is one of 5 HOFers in the '78 set and can be legitimately categorized as his RC since he had no cards produced during his playing days. It's now a Pop 1, with none higher. The '74 Satch was only the second 8.5 PSA had graded (I sub'd the first at the 2010 Natty) and up until this National they would have been the two highest-graded Paiges in the set. BUT, checking the pop reports after I received this sub, I saw that not only did someone hit a Paige in 9, but two more 10s of other HOFers had popped (bringing the total pop of 10s for the '74 Laughlin set to 4 out of 694 graded cards; I had sub'd the only 2 10s before this. If anyone reading this knows who has these cards please let them know that I'd be very interested in buying them!)
Looking forward to Atlantic City already!
