A quick Natty recap

I'm at O'Hare waiting for my flight. I have some time to kill, so I thought I'd give a really quick rundown. I was at the Natty from Thursday until around 2:30 on Sunday. Got to hang out with my good friend, Dan (thunderdan) and met some other great guys as well, including Mike (cpamike), Mike (mknez), Mike (stone), Kirk, Dustin, Jeff (cardcountry), Curt (Bbcemporium), David (mikelowell), Tom (purduepete), Brian (Chiefs), Scott (otwcards), Bobby (bporter - not the other guy), Matt Miller, Eric, as well as many others that I will remember when I do a proper recap. I know I'm forgetting a lot of names - CPA Mike will help out with that later.

Anyway, I finished my '70 and '75 football sets and my '70 and '72 baseball sets. Made some great progress on my new Red Man project. Hit a bunch of other sets as well.

Then I went a little crazy. Instead of sticking to the plan and whittling down a few sets even further, yesterday I decided to start a new one: 1953 Bowman Color. I've always loved that set - it's really the most beautiful post-war set imo. Got a great deal from a couple of my favorite dealers, scoring a few dozen beaters to get me well on my way.

The crazy actually began on Thursday afternoon, though. At no time prior to the Natty was I thinking, "I need to own a T-3". Happened by a table that is OBC-friendly and got to talking to him a little. Saw his stack of Turkey Reds with a Brooklyn player on top. Made the mistake of picking it up. About three minutes later I was pulling out my wallet. My first T-3!

So now I have a problem. I really like this card. Can't stop looking at it, can't stop showing to everyone I know. So Friday I go back and grabbed this:

image

I was going to buy a third one and had negotiated a price for it, but I waited too long. It was a gorgeous horizontal Jordan fielding pose, already in a SGC slab. Oh well, another will come along. In the meantime I'm very happy with my new Turkey Reds.

I'll do a proper write up when I get home and supply some better scans.

Congrats on completing the sets as well as the new T3s!

You probably noticed this, but one of the things I like about T3s that you don't really get from the scan is the texture. They almost have a lemon peel-like quality to them. The colors, the cool poses, the larger size, and the fact that they were premiums for which you had to mail away -- all of these things make T3 Turkey Reds one of the most interesting sets in the hobby.

    Hiya Geordie

It was a pleasure meeting you at the National!

Those are some really nice T3s - the important thing is that the picture area is clean and bright - nice going. Also, congratulations on your first T3 - my first turned out to the trimmed.

I've meet a lot of really great guys this week - it's been the highlight of my 3 week vacation!

One of the highlights of this year's National was getting to hang out with you Geordie. As great as it is to converse with you here, it was even better to talk in person. And the beers helped too. Hopefully we'll be able to do it again in two years. Great pickups and I agree with Chuck on those T3s...definitely cool to look at in person.

If only that Dan guy would have stopped following us around the show, we might have gotten to more tables. Hi Dan. image

Love the T3's Geordie. That set really scares me. I absolutely love them and afraid if I get one in my hands, it will be another set I will start.

Sorry to hear that you got stuck with that Mike character. He really is harmless. Hiya Mike. image

Geordie, it was nice to finally meet you and some of the other forum members at the show (cpamike, thunderdan, stone193, stooge, etc.). It's nice to be able to put faces to the screen names.

Congrats on finishing a couple of sets, and on your new T3's! Only 5 more to go (unless you count the 2 multi-player cards that also feature Superbas). Hopefully one of them will have an ad back... image

Great to hear you had a good time, Goudey (close enough?).

Please let us know when you are back in California so we can give Brett Butler the all clear to come out of hiding. image

How many Dodgers are in the T3 set anyhow?

Congrats on polishing off 4 vintage sets... as a fellow set collector, I know what a great feeling that is. How long were you working on them?

Finally sat down to do a little scanning. I won't bore you guys with the 60s and 70s HOFers I picked up, but I will show these off.

First up are the two T-3s from the first post.

Next up are Red Man Tobacco. Here's a great article by Jim Churilla that gives great detail about these cards. They were issued in pouches of tobacco and can be collected up to four different ways: with or without the cut-off tab (50 of the tabs could be redeemed for a big-league ball cap) and sometimes with two different expiration dates. I initially chose to collect them without the tab, as they would be less expensive. However, several cards were available at the Natty with the tab present, so I'll collect them both ways. I won't be paying any attention to the possibility of date variations.

First up is my lone 1952.

    Great stuff geordie!

I've always liked the Red Man's too, although ironically I only have one of them, a 52 ted williams gai 6 with the tab; the gai holder is so big you can serve breakfast in bed on it.

Geordie sweet pickups on the Red Man's, those are very attractive cards.
