Flor, dude, not Hort

I try not to bore, but I thought this was interesting.
I could not understand why the first part of the word Horticultural looked so mutilated. I put the medal under the loupe and it appeared that someone crudely defaced the first part of the word and then stamped in "Flor." I never heard of the word Floricultural, but a search on Google revealed that, indeed, there was a Royal South London Floricultural Society. I guess they opted for a modified Horticultural medal rather than a specially struck Floricultural.

I too had never heard the word "floricultural", but it makes sense. Weird how they altered the medal. Kinda neat.

That is fascinating. I love this anecdote, it's a great illustration of how coins can teach history. Some of them don't have much of a story, but some really do and this is one. Wonderful find. Congrats and thanks for posting man!
