1979-80 Topps HOCKEY pack rip!

Thought this deserved a different thread, so here goes.

1979-80 Topps Hockey pack - what a beauty
image

Was "gifted" this at the National on the requirement that I free these poor guys from their wax cage. Twist my arm! image

I held it for a day just to let it settle into the thought of being in my collection, I felt like the BBCE booth was the best place to open it up and be ready JUST IN CASE!

In hindsight I could have probably seen the back card, but I was sworn to open no matter what so I didn't even bother to look first.

I know very little about Hockey from any era especially pre-1980, but I do know there are some hall of famers to be found in these packs.

Hello guy with an awesome mustache and was an All Star - seems like maybe you were good but you're not the dude I'm looking for. And your centering is making my heart flutter for all the wrong reasons!

Never heard of you, buddy, but you played in New York which is probably some level of complement. Your centering is a little better, things improving slowly. You need a mustache, though.

OK, who pulled the razor out or were these taken first day of the season?

I honestly never knew Hotlanta had a hockey team this early in time! Learned something there. I think I see a faint scruff of a 'stache, and your centering is definitely what I'm looking for, bro!

Here we go again, this definitely isn't a playoff pose! And who spells Alan with an "i"? This buy is either French or Canadian, or maybe both?

I've heard of this team, 0 sure seems like a weird sticker to me. Isn't the idea to score goals?
    image

So I've sort of heard of a couple of these guys before. I do like the facial hair progression of this card, though. Dude kinda reminds me of Brian Dennehy in Silverado, and pretty anything cowboy is near and dear to us Texans. Here's to you, Bernie!

I also think this what Tom from OPC would look like if could grow a beard! image CHALLENGE ISSUED!

OK guys - seriously this centering deal is getting a little redundant. Top to bottom, left to right, get it in line please! Were there really this many 19 year olds playing in the NHL back then? I thought all those guys were on the Olympic team.
    image

Much better. Now if you'll just change your name you'll be EXACTLY what I'm looking for to add to the team.

OK, team card. That's alright, I'm actually a big fan of these and wish the new issues would include these sorts of cards. I miss them. Some of flyers did a nice job representing with the 'staches AND fros! On white boys no less! Great work, fellas! Also, is that a blue battery coming down or does Philly save those must for Santa?

OK boys - we got one final shot here! Wait - I haven't seen the gum! Where's the gum? Has anyone seen the gum? Please say it isn't so...

Too bad there's no Gretzky. I am always weary purchasing single packs as I am afraid whoever cracked the box open stopped at Gretzky. It makes sense to put on the brakes after he's pulled. The only time I felt comfortable buying single packs was back when BBCE had them for sale on their site and we did group rips....I think they were about $65/pack then.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like anything is worth subbing from the pack, as you can probably tell.

    Buy and rip another?

What the...DUDE, what were saying about the centering man? You cannot be serious!
    image

And wow - a square little $#1^ to boot - and no mustache - what did I do to make you so rebellious?
    image

Oh well - still GREAT fun. Steve watched as I opened this thing and mid pack he says "Your hands are shaking."

I gave the only reasonable reply that could be given in that moment - "I'm cold." image What a bunch of bull, I was amped up thinking of what I'd do if Wayne came to see me, of course!

Alas, it was not meant to be. Big thanks though to my "sponsor" - it was definitely exciting and I appreciate the gesture very much.
