thoughts on 1988 topps?

was reading a thread on another board and was surprised to find the amount of folks that bashed the 88 topps design.

with production run and lack of value aside...

what's everyone else's thoughts simply on design?

    I always liked Topps' 87 and 88 designs. Seemed to have a more authentic, classic look and feel.

    Don't care for 88 but I always liked the wood grain 87. Reminds me of 62 Topps.


    Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

    would agree. was not a fan of the 87 and subsequently 62 either.

    just a lil bland w/ lack of color for my tastes.

    edit: really digging #200 boggs card.

    I loved the 87 set and remember being disappointed when the 88s came out. I have come around on it though.

    The set would have been much more palatable had they started the 1st round draft pick cards that year. Griffey and Biggio would have been decent additions.

    I always liked 88 and 87 Topps. Nice designs - the 87 clearly a throwback to 1962.

    I thought the '88's were OK back in the day but for me it became a case of just ripping too many and I got sick of them.
    I've donated several monster boxes full to charity over the years.

    Always liked '87. I think I got sick of '88 and '89 because I ripped approximately 13 bazillion packs as a kid but have completely come around on them in the past year. A perfectly centered PSA 10 '88 Glavine is on my to-do list. The '88 set now seems cleaner and a more classic design to me than it was 27 years ago when I had zero perspective. I like that '89 might have the most errors and variations of any Topps set, ever.

    I think it's a great design. It's simple at first glance, but it's actually very colorful, which is difficult to pull off. The framed borders show off the photos well (and provide color). And the effect of having the picture overlap the team name makes many of the photos seem to jump off the card.

    Don't care for 87 design, not a fan of the wood grain look. I like 86 and 88 though.

    after opening a vending case of 88 topps a few years ago($30 delivered, seemed like a good idea, lol), it gives me a headache just looking at these cards...

    I have collected all the Topps sets to date. I like both the design of both the 87 and 88 issues.

    Up until 1994 I collected not only the base sets, but also any insert, ancillary or test set for each year, and tended to judge each year by the complete Topps product line for that year

    Ditto... that rip hurt. What hurt worse was the submission. I was hunting for a GEM Ripken, but most came back 8s with a couple 9s.

    I agree. If I still rode a bike, those bad boys would be in my bike spokes.
