Elway rookie SGC 98 - any chance for a PSA 10?

This Elway rookie was graded a Gem Mint SGC 98 by SGC probably 15+ years ago, and has been tucked away in a collection ever since. I know this has never been submitted for a crossover.

Any chance at a crossover on this? Centering seems solid (just a touch high on T/B?) - any other red flags you may see as to why it wouldn't cross?

And I know submitting an old SGC card to PSA for a crossover is a longshot at getting the cross, but I would hate to bust out an SGC 98.

Thoughts? What would others do? Thanks!

  • You mentioned it, but I would be worried that the T/B centering is a dealbreaker.

Beauty....... Busting out a gem card is a bad idea and I'd say you have a 5-10% chance depending on the grader for a crossover.

I do not think it will cross, based on the centering and the print. It's a beautiful card though!

It's hard to tell based on the scan, but it does look similar to the one below, as it was the one graded right before it. Are the blue print dots in yours, like this:

Card looks very nice, definitely worth a shot. I wouldn't crack out though.
    Good luck!
  • I don't feel you'll ever get a 100% unbiased opinion in the competitor's holder. Cracking it means you have a 50% chance of losing the current gem mint status. It all comes down to how lucky you feel.

Surfaces don't look Gem Mint to me. I would keep it as is.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

It's does look aweful snowy, but the none of the scans are all that clear. If that is surface snow, I definitely would not send it either way.
  • Due to politics, chances are highly unlikely it will crossover.
  • top to bottom centering is off just a tad too much IMO

    nice card though

I would definitely try and cross that card. The difference in price is definitely too strong to not take a shot plus the original SGC holder is not nearly as popular as the newer SGC holders. All of the other tens on VCP (in the past year) are centered better top to bottom then this card.

The other option might be to try and get it re-holdered by SGC into a new holder. Then send it to PSA. Worst case scenario you could sell the card in a new SGC holder.

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys - appreciate it! Certainly gives me some good ideas as I ponder the best approach for this one....
  • Nothing really to lose from trying to cross it but no way would I crack it out. Think it has a zero chance of a 10 with that T/B centering.
