Inspired by Zohars lack of self control I ventured into the world of French coins. After a little dickering with NEN this one is on the way. I love bronze, and I love matte proofs, so even though it isn't British I fell in love with this one, it has a look I really like.

1898 10 Centimes, Matte Proof, PCGS 64BN.

Many would opine that the 10 centimes of this period was one of the loveliest coins ever struck.

The pre-WWI 5 and 10 centimes are indeed beautiful coins. It's a shame they are so often weakly struck. Your proof is a great-looking specimen!

The coins of this period in France remind me of the Columbian Exposition pictures I have read about. The neoclassical rendering has always struck my fancy. Across from where I went to school, in Jackson Park, there is a recreation of the Statue of the Republic from the exposition that was erected on the 25th anniversary of the Exposition and the centennial of Illinois Statehood.

Splendid coin. The "flan mat" pieces that France stuck in the late 19th century are wonderful pieces of art!! I REALLY like that coin!
