Scrapbook Find: Dimaggio Rookie, Feller rookie, Gehrig +

Beware - this is a painful sight!

From a 1930's Canadian scrapbook loaded with tons of World Wide Gum issues and hundreds of newspaper photos...

- All card backs were skinned/removed (except for the Feller) prior to being glued in the scrapbook
- Most cards were trimmed (some more than others) around the borders and image

I now own what is likely the worst condition Joe Dimaggio rookie card in existence - and just as likely the worst conditioned Bob Feller rookie as well. Yay!

1936 World Wide Gum (Dimaggio, Grove, McCarthy, Weintraub), 1934 World Wide Gum (Gehrig), and 1937 O-Pee-Chee (Feller)

And a few more for the sake of show and tell (but still, beware the sadness of destroyed rare vintage cards!)

Cool find. I like well-loved cards like this. Somebody spent their time making that scrapbook just how they wanted it.
  • Thanks for sharing. Can you tell us more about how you came across the book? Did you know these were in it when you purchased the book?

I bought a few dozen pages from a book that contained about 1000 total pages. The pages I purchased were the ones with most of the cards. The rest of the book is 99% newspaper clippings but is still very neat. Some of the other card issues includes are 1933 World Wide Gum (looks just like Goudey), 1933 Canadian Butterfinger, and some random premiums.

So, the Dimaggio rookie can go for $2,000 in poor condition when 100% of the card is intact. I wonder what 35% of the total card is worth? Unfortunately, not 35% of the full thing!

I plan on keeping the Grove, McCarthy, Feller, and likely the Dimaggio card and will be trying to move the rest to recoup some of the cost. For these, I definitely overpaid. I just thought they were cool and wanted them :-) I wonder if newspaper clippings are an item that people would purchase? All are from Canadian newspapers in the 1930's and are pretty neat - I'll post some pictures when I get around to it.

Tell me these aren't cool! ...and God knows what newspaper in Canada they are from and if many of the photos still exist elsewhere.

At first I agreed with you on being a "painful sight" with backs being gone and trimmed but once I went through the collection I thought it was really cool. It makes you think about the person that took the time to do this and knowing they had a love for the game. Really great collection there. Thanks for sharing. Doug

Here are a few more cards with how they are arranged on the page...

I plan on framing some of these as I like how they were arranged.
