Post War Starting 5

I'll admit I totally romanticize the players that came before me, and prefer to collect them and the players that played during my youth far more than players I'm older than.

That being said, if I was putting together my starting 5 from Post War Era it would be:

Koufax
Gibson
Spahn
Ryan
Marichal

What would yours be?

52-90 All Sports, Mostly Topps, Mostly HOF, and some assorted wax.

The list of guys left off the list is nearly as impressive as the guys on it. Tough to decide to bench Seaver, Carlton, Paige, Spahn, Feller, Marichal, Clemens, etc. but I might go with:

    Ryan
    Gibson
    Koufax
    R.Johnson
    Maddux

Great question, Jim. It is very difficult, but my 5 would be, in no particular order:

    Seaver
    Gibson
    Koufax
    Maddux
    Marichal

I even ranked them for you:

    Gibson
    Koufax
    Spahn
    Ryan
    Seaver

I wanted to vote in recent HOF inductees like Pedro, Maddux or randy johnson but couldn't make myself do it.

Edit to add: so far Gibson and Koufax are unanimous and I really don't see how anybody could leave them off. I only see 9 names in this thread so far and all are deserving. I don't see anybody I would vehemently disagree with, like mike mussina or something.

    On a more serious note:

    Koufax
    Gibson
    Seaver
    Carlton
    Martinez

I see all most everybody has included Koufax?

(I have NO IDEA how the Mets are only 2 games out! But I'm luvin it.)

Here's my real list. I wonder what peoples lists would look like if they picked it 2 ways. First, by the average game the pitcher had over his lifetime (which is how I think we all picked ours) and Second, by the best single year a pitcher ever had.

    Tom Seaver
    Bob Gibson
    Sandy Koufax
    Randy Johnson
    Nolan Ryan

I think Seaver, Gibson and Koufax are the top 3. I probably could have chosen any of 5-7 players for 4th and 5th.
    STAY HEALTHY!

    Doug

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

If you went the route of single season, this life-long Tiger fan would have to include 1968 Denny McLain.

I'd select '85 Gooden on that note!

'85 Gooden is exactly what I was thinking. How about the second half of '85 for John Tudor. Didn't he start 1-7, then finish 20-1?
