Please define MOOSE? (in terms of relating to a coin)

Hello, I am looking for insight into this relatively new term, MOOSE? (new to me anyways, not sure how new it really is).

Can you guys tell me what specifically it is describing? Is it toning, if so, does it have to do with just the color, or does the value come into play as well? What about coins without toning of any sort, say, one that is bought from a dealer, for a few bucks, but then is graded, and then sells for 5 figures? Would that be a moose, even though there is no color? Just want to understand this term.

Thanks.

one could have a ...strike moose
stewart blays pcgs 1919 ms69rd lincoln...a lincoln moose right here

a 1921 peace dollar moose right there

applied to many a toner...that's just jaw dropping...surely the finest one can lay eyes on

    the moose
largest animal roaming around america...there is no mistaking a moose when in it's presence

a friend of mine in the navy told me his story of him and 3 buddies hitting a full grown bull moose on a highway traveling 70 mph
it wiped out and totaled their car...the moose
just got up and walked away

    but yeah
a coin that stands above any other or one in and of the herd that does

a huge coin as is the animal it's named after

The term has been used for quite a while and generally refers to a coin that has a quality far in excess of other, typical examples. This could be strike, luster, toning, eye appeal or whatever.

The adjective is most commonly used for color though. LasVegasTeddy provided fantastic examples for the strike though! Those are great!

To me, a "Moose" is the kind of coin of which I usually say "Holy Sh!t" when I see it for the first time.

I used to call them "head and shoulder" coins because these are specimens that are
head and shoulders nicer than any others. They are usually superb Gem or better though
with rare dates they only need to be nicely made and well preserved.

They're just coins that stand far out from anything else, like the coins pictured above or
a highly PL and flawless 1974 half dollar.

I have found the term used by various sellers on various quality of coins, sort of like "PQ," depends on the seller. But in almost all cases when they use the word "moose", it means that the selling price of the coin is way way WAY higher then I would have guessed.

That is one of the better examples I've seen recently on the forum. Pic is over lighted. Would be nice to see this coin re-pic-ed in all her glory.

Definition of Moose in coin terms? Godzilla, monster, killer, Frankenstein, King Kong holding Fay Wray on the top of the Empire State Building, until you see it in hand, beware.

Moose - An incredible coin, usually one that grades MS/PR-67 or higher or a coin with astounding eye-appeal (c.1976-1980) A phenomenal quality coin. Evidently penned by "Boy Wonder" Kevin Lipton.
