Smithsonian Museum of American History

Just returned for a couple day family vacation to Washington DC. While there we brought the kids to a couple of the Smithsonian Museums and was surprised to see a new Gallery of Numismatics exhibit. Unfortunately it was scheduled to open the day I was leaving (today). When we were there on Sunday they didn't have the opening blocked off so you could peek inside. Seemed to be a lot more than just US coins form what I could see. Hoping someone in the forum is local and can give us an overview.

That have another small exhibit that was open and has mostly US coins but did include some ancient and world stuff, I think I remember seeing a couple Mexican Pesos and Reales, some Thalers, English and Russian stuff.

Its been years since I was there and good to see that efforts are being made to display some of the collection again.

The Smithsonian has some truely amazing material and some of it is finally being shared online. OT I know, but they have put online the collection of specimens pulled when BEP national banknote printing plates were being proofed and approved. Logically organized and thousands of images are available at the click of a mouse (well, more or less). I've seen things in my little collecting corner of the world that I didn't know existed before (and after 25 years of intense focus/primary research in this area). Both expanded my knowledge and provided some new areas to research in more detail and maybe collect! Hope the coins, including the darkside ones, are not too far behind!

With the tsumani of research and resources in all areas pouring out these days, much of which is available online and generally free, this may be the best time EVER to be a collector.
