I blame this forum for why I'm so picky on PSA 9's

I collected quite a bit as a kid, but took long 25 year break to go to school, start a business and family. When I jumped back into cards 5 years ago, bought a ton of stuff; all vintage PSA 9's and ultra high end sets; and some junk modern to organize with my kids.

Started lurking on this forum few years ago. Now I'm looking at tilt, centering, corners, coloring, shading, whiting, rough edges, fish eyes, PD's, toning, shifting, etc. For gosh sake, it's rare for me to find a 9 now that I really fall in love with. And when I do, I go nuclear. Granted, I've got most of everything I need already, so I'm mostly in the upgrade business. But thanks to everyone on this board for educating me on this truly deserving concept; buy the card, not the grade...ain't that the truth.

I too look at cards closer, but I've fallen in love with well centered 5/6/7 HOFers that still can be had for a good price. They make for nice upgrades to my raw sets and look awesome outside of their plastic case. I'm learning to let perfection go and enjoy cards that present well to the naked eye.

Totally understand where you are coming from. When I pick up a 9 these days a lot of times it could pass for a 10. It certainly is not easy finding a centered 9 without other issues. Here are a couple of 9's I recently picked up. The 77 Bench has been just over a year searching for the right one and the Jabbar card was just a couple of months.

mcolney1, I also look for the nice eye-appeal mid grade cards.

That '77 Bench is fantastic! Tough year to find that kind of quality for sure.

    Thanks PaulMaul,

What I find amazing are the images that sellers' post when selling on Ebay. Here is a perfect example with both the 81 Jabbar and 77 Bench. The Bench I thought might have a print defect that maybe some how slipped by the grader. When you look at the Ebay image you can see some issues with the face as it looks like a print defect. I really thought that when I got the card in hand it might look like the Ebay image. I was very happy when I got the card in hand and it did not have the print issues. Not sure what caused that with the Ebay image but I'm sure it turned away some potential bidders.

The Jabbar has a thumb print on the case that looks like it might be on the card along with some other snowy areas. Once again when I received the card and wiped the case all of the issues were gone. Sometimes I know the graders get a bad rap but I figured both of those cards had to be better than the Ebay image based on the grade so I went for it.
