Did My "Once in a Lifetime" pass me by?

Hey Guys,

So you always hear stories about collectors or just ordinary people finding old cards at garage sales or in an attic or hidden in a wall. Those Once in a lifetime finds. My brothers and I own a house in Lockwood NY that we use as a summer/hunting house. The property borders my Aunt and Uncle's house with about 50 acres between us. There are many garage sales closer to town almost every weekend during the spring and summer. So about a month ago my brother goes to the house and as we always do, visits my aunt and uncle while there. They get to talking and I had asked my brother to ask my aunt, who stops off at any garage sale she sees, to call me if she sees any baseball cards. My aunt says I didn't know Chris (me) collects baseball cards. My brother responds by telling her I have a large collection and I'm always looking for more. She then tells my brother she has about 6 cases of unopened baseball cards upstairs sitting in the bathtub of a bathroom they do not use. She says they have been there for years. She tells my brother to tell me if I want them I can take them the next time I come to visit. I have no idea what years they are and of course my head starts spinning and excitement overcomes me. I decided not to call her to find out what they were as I wanted to be surprised.

Fast forward to this past weekend. I went to the house to do some work and to relax. I went to visit my aunt and the first thing she said to me is "I have cases of unopened baseball cards for you." I'll bring some down and if you want them they're yours. She then tells me she thinks they are 1982-1984. I'm currently building a PSA 10 1983 set so I got very excited and who wouldn't want unopened 1982 cards?. She comes down with 2 rack packs and says she has 3 cases of each. They turn out to be................drum roll.......... 1988 and 1989 Score. Come on!!!! Why can't I ever get lucky? Most people never get lucky enough to find unopened cards and when my turn finally comes around this is what I get? Oh well, I'll tuck them in the closet and forget about them.

It was fun while it lasted, the dreaming of unopened 60s or 70s, the pack fresh cards being sent to PSA for grading. What excitement.

I just hope that wasn't my "Once in a Lifetime" find and that sometihng like this comes along again.

Just thought I'd share

Chris

If it's any consolation, the 1988 Score set might be the best use of photography in any 1980s set. image

Actually, I remember when these first came out. I thought the colors and pictures were awesome.

It's a really nice looking set. When my desire for them equals my disposable income I plan on doing a PSA 10 set of them. All of the photos seem to capture the player at their most distinctive and iconic point in their windup or swing. They also made an effort to do some unique compositions, like keeping the entirety of the bat in frame on this Nokes.

  • I agree, this was a really good looking card set. Always loved the colors. It was either the first or one of the first to show a picture also on the back of the card. Great overall set design.

Great story... sounds a lot like my "potential Once in a Lifetime" stories.

Speaking of 1989 Score, how's this one GRAB you? lol
