The coin just returned from PCGS, where I fully expected it would receive an AU grade; it is as nice as any AU53 you'll find on the market. My guess is a little bit of grime at the highest points of the devices (wing, shield, hair curls, etc) is to blame for the conservative assessment. If you're not a purist, a little bit of Acetone should do the trick. Personally, I prefer some dirt on my early silver (I think it adds character) and this is why I am leaving the decision up to the buyer.
