It's back - PSA Set Registry Top Pop Bonus Points

PSA Set Registry Top Pop Bonus Points

Dear Set Registry Members,

We are pleased to announce that the Top Pop Bonus program is rolling out today. This new program was postponed until the PSA Set Registry award deadline had passed and the winners for 2015 were announced.

In order to reward the owners of cards and tickets that are the highest graded, we are adding 2 bonus points for items with populations of one, none graded higher, and 1 bonus point for items that are tied for the very best with none graded higher. These points will be added to the grade of your card as shown in the examples below:

Your Card Status Your Grade Points
8 highest graded (two or more PSA Pop) 9
8 highest graded (only one graded) 10
8.5 highest graded (two or more PSA Pop) 9.5
8.5 highest graded (only one graded) 10.5

Should the population change for your item and it loses either the “highest graded” or “highest graded, only one of that grade” status, the bonus points will be adjusted or dropped accordingly.

Bonus points will not be applied to sets that are open ended and do not require specific items, such as some of the Hall of Fame sets where any card can be used for a player. For sets that have multiple specs in a line item, like the basic T-206 sets, for example, if the card being listed is the highest graded for all that are allowed in the slot, then it will receive bonus points.

For multi-spec sets, we are changing the format for the population columns so that you will be able to see the population for the particular item you are listing as well as the total populations for all specs within a slot. Note that there may be some discrepancies between what shows in the Registry versus the Population Report. This may be due to specs that are not yet recorded in the Registry composition or cards that do not list as separate line items in the Population Report such as T-206 Unknown Backs.

Qualifiers will be treated as deductions in the population report data, so if the population report shows a count of five qualifiers in PSA 4, those cards will be counted as PSA 2s. To review the qualifier deductions, please visit the Rules page.

We are excited about the dynamic Top Pop Bonus Point program and look forward to the new level of competition it is sure to bring. It could take over a week for all the sets in the Registry to recalculate so your patience is appreciated. Should you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at bsearls@collectors.com.
Best Wishes,

BJ Searls

Looks like it has been applied to some sets and not to others. Is this a slow process to roll out?

When they first announced this last time it took a day for your set rating to update even though the current finest possible rating was.

In the last month, the weightings on several of my sets have been changed, and now this...but the numerical averages for my sets don't seem to have changed.
  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭✭✭
It looks like the GPA of my sets increased. I don't like it if that's the case. I don't chase the awards. I'd rather just see what my set grades out without the bonus points and all. If they want to have a bonus, keep the grade the same and just increase the rating. My '67 set now has a GPA over 9 even though I don't own a 10 for that set.

Just to make sure I understand this...Olander's 1971 set below should now have a GPA Of close to 10, since nearly every card is tied for the highest grade...right?

If you go through the set. The one's that are silver get one point and the one's that are gold get two.

It may get more complicated for sets that have weighting structures. For example the person who has the PSA 10 Wayne Gretzky that has a weigting of 10 would get 120 points I believe.

I have a few PSA 12's now, reminds me of when I found out kids were getting grades higher than 4.0, because they were taking college level courses in high school.

I see your '67 set as having a GPA below 9. Did it get changed back, or am I missing something?

ETA: The set with wax pack seems to have received the bonus points, but the basic set without pack hasn't. Weird.

My highest rated set now has a 11.320 average. Every card is either a PSA 10 or PSA 9 with none higher. Hmmmmmmm.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the structure was slightly different the first time. I thought if it was pop 1, none higher, then it got 2 bonus points, but that it had to be pop 2, none higher to get the one bonus point. I think that's the way it should be: bonus points for cards that are low pop, none higher. For example, I have a PSA 10 Yaz with a pop of over 100 10's. I don't think that should count as 11 points. The ten is no biggie.

When I first read the email I scimmed it and thought it was exactly how you laid it out. After reading it again I saw the two or more pop was the one bonus point.

Yep I see it's back under 9. I added a Banks PSA 9 today and when I confirmed the addition, it had my GPA above 9. Maybe they're still tweaking the registry.

Edited to add - I just realized I hadn't confirmed the basic set yet with the Banks addition. Now that I've done so, it's migrated to the new grading scale and indeed shows the GPA above 9.

None of my sets seem to have changed. Do you have to add/upgrade the set before the change is reflected, I wonder?

So now all 10s are now 11s right?

I see the price premium for a PSA 10 just got a little more expensive!

I agree, that doesn't seem like the best answer for multiple pops at least at the 10 level!

None of my sets are either. Last time they updated at midnight and the next day reflected the change. I would imagine the white, grey and yellow identifiers have been added to your sets when you see them already but no change to the GPA.

  • PaulMaulPaulMaul Posts: 4,891 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, the identifiers are there, but no GPA change. Some of the changes in weightings from a long time ago don't seem to be reflected in the GPA either.

Correct. Only the sets I updated today reflect the new changes. The 1967 basic set still had my GPA at 8.96 today until I added the Banks and published the update.

but you don't get "super duper automatic quadruple" points for owning both of 9's w/ none higher? image

    image

and what happens if you hit the "i don't agree" tab?

it helps me out in a lot of occasions, but i don't like it.

edit: do the guys at the top really need bonus points? i mean, seriously!

    i gotta better idea.

after you get bonus points, why don't we just give the #1 guys a $10,000 check, a free fedex gift card valued @ $500 and a personal secretary to track down & purchase other low pop cards and further their sets even more...

    sound good?

I think something is wrong. I'm getting grey on pretty much every PSA 10. On my Bo set for example...

    image

ETA: I guess that's how it's supposed to be this time around? "In order to reward the owners of cards and tickets that are the highest graded, we are adding 2 bonus points for items with populations of one, none graded higher, and 1 bonus point for items that are tied for the very best with none graded higher." So, every 10 gets a bonus... That doesn't make much sense to me.

I thought last time around it was gold status (2 points) for PSA 10 POP 1 and silver status for either PSA 10 POP 2 or PSA 9 POP 1 none higher. I certainly don't remember every 10 getting a bonus point and I don't understand how that makes any sense.

So all 10s are 11s now? I think I shall refer to this phenomenon as "extra credit". LOL.

For reference, the previous e-mail from April 2nd. It is basically worded the same:

    Dear PSA Set Registry Members,

For many years, we’ve had feedback from members about our 1-10 weighting scale. For the most part, this scale has serviced us well. Generally, it takes into account the grade and rarity. However, in certain instances, specifically, with cards that are the single finest or tied for the finest graded, the 1-10 scale doesn’t account for the premium that most collectors must pay to own the very best.

In order to reward the owners of these very special cards, we are adding 2 bonus points for items with populations of one, none graded higher, and 1 bonus point for cards that are tied for the very best with none graded higher. These points will be added to the grade of your card as shown in the examples below:

Your Card Status Your Grade Points
    8 Highest graded (PSA Pop 2) 9
8 Highest graded (only one graded) 10
    8.5 Highest graded (PSA Pop 2) 9.5
8.5 Highest graded (only one graded) 10.5

Should the population change for your item and it loses either the "highest graded" or "highest graded, only one of that grade" status, the bonus points will be adjusted or dropped accordingly.

We are always amazed at the tremendous job our Set Registry participants do with building their collections and we feel the added points for "Pop Tops" will appropriately reward the "best of the best" and the collectors that pursue them. As always, we appreciate your participation in the Set Registry. Happy collecting!

When I first read it I thought this. But after looking at it more carefully it says two or more.

"and 1 bonus point for items that are tied for the very best with none graded higher."

8 highest graded (two or more PSA Pop) 9
8 highest graded (only one graded) 10

I believe that was the previous rule, but now it seems you get an additional point for any top graded card with none graded higher and an extra point for if it's a POP 1.

This is silly. If 10,000 cards are graded 10, and all get a bonus point, how can that make sense? I understand the POP 1 thing, and possibly the POP 2, but POP 524? POP 14784? Hopefully this gets fixed or trashed.

    Aha, ok.

While I think it is a good marketing move on PSA's behalf, I don't care for the concept, personally. What is the point of a bonus point for a pop 100+ PSA 10 anyway?

I would much rather see sets reweighted based on true degree of difficulty for commons in addition to HOFers and star cards.

That is incorrect. If your card is a 10, and there are more than two cards graded 10, you don't get bonus points. If you card is the highest graded, including tens, and there is one other card besides yours also graded 10, you get one bonus point. If you have the highest graded card, including tens, and yours is the only card of that particular grade, you get two points.

Even though the set rating has yet to update on the registry page for my sets if you go to your my set registry and pull up a set. You will indeed see all that are silver with one bonus point and all that are yellow with two.

I repeat from my prior post. Two or more is the accurate interpretation for one bonus point.

Pop 1's just got more powerful in the registry.

All three of the primary Wrestling All Stars sets are equally weighted. The mega set however is not. The higher weighted cards are indeed amplified by this change. I have a Dusty Rhodes that is a PSA 10 Pop 1 and it is now a rating of 24.

If you go to the What if? tab it will show you the enhanced rating.

No. That's the way it SHOULD be. But the email states "2 or more" and I have a PSA 10 Yaz that has something like Pop 140 and it is shown in gray as getting a bonus point.

Edit: I have a PSA 10 that's pop 181. I just don't get why that's worth a bonus. I do agree that my PSA 5 - pop 1 none higher or my PSA 9 - pop 2 none higher should be worth a bonus.

I'm not a fan of the new bonus point system at all. The grading system for
cards (the 1-10 scale) was established to identify CONDITION of the card.
We have all learned this system over time. We know what a NM 7 card means
in terms of it's characteristics and possible flaws.
So if one owns a complete set where all cards are uniformly graded NM 7.....
AND THEY ARE ALL CURRENTLY 1 of 1's WITH NONE GRADED HIGHER.....
this set all of a sudden becomes a MINT Set???
How did the CONDITION of the set become better?
Am I missing something here? Perhaps I'm just not understanding this properly.

  • The grade doesn't change. The weight does. It's basically saying that a two PSA 7 cards are not equal is one of them has a pop of 25 with 6 higher and the other one is a pop 1 with 0 higher. Which is true--they aren't equal.

    My tuppence.

Unfortunately, PSA says that two PSA 10's, one POP 2 and one POP 1,000,000 should be treated the same by awarding each a bonus point.
  • augustamanaugustaman Posts: 584 ✭✭
I guess my question is more in response to previous posters that have said for example, "my set GPA
is now over 9.0 and I don't have any cards graded higher than MINT 9."

If this is truly a matter of.... "this NM 7 card is MORE VALUABLE than that NM 7 card because of a lower
graded population"..... then why doesn't PSA just adjust the "set composition" grading scales?

They already do that as a '52 Topps Mantle has a weighting of 10 and a common has a weighting of 1.
When all is said and done though, if you complete that set with all PSA NM 7 cards, your final Set Rating
is 7.0 as I believe it should be. I don't think the grade should be raised because you have some low pop
    cards in the set.

I don't think PSA sets the weight of cards. Every new set I've created / requested, I was the one who created the weighting, by their request.
