Not happy with how this graded - 81 OPC Bourque

Purchased this raw and thought I had a big hit, not sure what I am missing on this because in hand I see no issues, Not even 1/2 grade love for a set notorious for centering issues, and 1st card in set. Maybe someone who hasn't graded a lot of OPC cards? Am I wrong, is it top to bottom centering? See another 7 I have for comparison are these cards equals?

Thoughts welcome.

Did you request "no qualifiers" for the card on the top? I could see that in a PSA 9 (OC) holder. I could also see it in a PSA 8. However, the bottom left corner might be an issue there. Hard to tell since OPC cards can be so rough cut. The bottom card looks like it really has something wrong with the top edge. I'm not sure that even looks like a PSA 7. I agree, your card looks better than a PSA 7. With the exception of the top, the bottom card has cleaner edges without nicks, unlike the top card.
I collect PSA cards of the following:
    Billy Ripken
    Cal Ripken, Jr. 1980-2002
    Cal Ripken, Sr.

What did you think it would grade?

I have graded a ton on 81 OPC and yes I think it's the centering. I Am surprised it's not an 8 or 7 of? Btw I subbed the first 10 on that card around 96. I bought it on my way out of a White Plains show.

Chris!! Haven't seen you in awhile...hope all is well!

I agree with what has been said about the centering. PSA is brutal on that with this issue...especially on the HOF players. And...they seem not to like .5 grades on regular submissions....seems more a thing for reviews.

Still....great looking card...hope you picked it up for a good price!

    Best,

I think 7 is the right grade. I'm not a centering guy per se, but that top/bottom centering is way off.

Based on the scan it looks like an 8 on most days, 7 on a bad day. It's always tough to compare your card to other graded ones, and yours does look much better than the other 7 you posted. For more comparison, I like yours over this one:

I agree, yours looks like a solid 8. Centering L/R is solid. For centering T/B, the imaginary line is at the too of word OPC, and across the bottom of the word defense. That second scan is nasty. Looks more like a 6 with that bad upper right corner. The top edge with the rough cut also has surface varicose veins if you will under the edge.

Thanks all for the feedback. I was hoping for a 9, but would have been happy with a strong 8. you submit enough cards and you are going to win some and lose some as I well know. This one happened to really surprise me. Patrick I have been doing well, mostly working on my Gretzky collection, but have a very nice 81 OPC hockey set that I have been slowly working on mainly raw, a really high end 75 topps set raw, and still working on the auto project with the 81 OPC sticker set. I have added quite a few, but hit a wall the last year or so. Have also followed your 89 Topps thread, that is a tough one, hope it is still bringing you enjoyment. Thanks again all, and take care.
