A question about the Binion hoard coins.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
Does anyone have graded pop numbers for the Hoard?? I have an opportunity to buy a fabulous 1888 graded MS65* with lovely true Rainbow Crescent tone across the lower left obverse and was curious about pricing. The seller was asking about $650 and part of the "pitch" had to do with the * designation. I was really struck with the coin and suppose I could get it next month when I see the seller but I thought I'd seek some "counseling" from those who know better than me about these things.

I would think it's less about the Binion and the "star" than it is just how "moose" the color is. A star Morgan could bring as little as 10-30% above the price of a normal one. This one is going for around 3X MS65 money so it better be well into the A quality range. My next step would be to call up the Heritage archives and do a search for MS65* Morgans or something close. I think most examples would be worth in the $225-$450 range. It will take something pretty nice to go for $650+. And then there's also the issue that many of these 65's might be 64+ at best. The MS65 Moose range seems to begin around $1,000 or so. I doubt you'll get one of those for $650 from a sharp dealer. The other hoards out there (Battle Creek, etc.) would also affect the Binion coins.

I'd add too many of the Binion Morgans were awarded the STAR with very little above average eye appeal.

And I'll add that the Binion hoard consisted of truckloads of silver dollars. Many of which were graded and are
as common as sin here in Vegas. (pun intended).

this coin is brilliant on both sides except for the tone which starts around the P-L of Pluribus, sweeps across the lower part of the face and ends in the middle of the stars under UNUM. the color on the face is banded till it reaches the field which is mostly medium electric blue. the tone really isn't dark in any areas which is what gives the coin such appeal. I'll have to think on it some.

overall the quality and cleanness of the coin is good for the grade, but I will admit being distracted by the tone.

A crescent of electric blue on a mostly white coin doesn't sound Moosey enough.

In my mind, Binion adds nothing to the value. How does it compare to this one that sold 3 years ago for $425? I don't think it would fetch that right now. I can promise you I would not pay that much and I collect these puppies!

Man, I'm glad I don't collect Morgans any more. That coin is an MS63, tops, just based on all the field hits. Could have bought it for $40 back in the late 1990s when I collected Morgans. That amount includes a 100% premium above retail ($20) for the pretty toning.

Every Binion I have seen is overgraded, sometimes 2 grades by PCGS standards right now.

Tough crowd. A Binion is not getting any more love than a Bunion.

you mis-read my reply. I said "the color on the face is banded" and when it reaches the field the field is "mostly medium electric blue. the tone on the obverse covers less than half of the coin and it is nowhere near as dark as any of the linked/pictured coins.

it isn't worth arguing or debating for me, I was just hoping to get an understanding about what the numbers are and how NGC graded them as a group.

I owned one years ago same grade. It had what I call a true rainbow (several distinct bands) about where you describe. No blue in the field that I recall.
Back then the price you mentioned sounds fairly close. I don't really know the market on them these days. I didn't see too many Binions with these very nice crescents. I liked mine and it was one of those coins you can't quite pull the trigger on at a show, get home and call the dealer at the show and say "I'll take it." Then pay shipping too!

As a Binion coin, I agree with others that there should be zero premium associated with that. A star can bring a premium in it's own right but only if warranted....and sometimes if there are super few for the date. So based on that, assuming it is graded properly, which many of them were not, and if it is a common date and then in a common grade(besides the star) you should start at bid and decide for yourself what color $ premium to assign to the coin that you are comfortable with. Then if you are able to get a photo...message a few of your trusted forumites asking if the coin is worth xyz premium for the toning. Even a quick iPhone pic can be good enough sometimes.

    Good luck.

I aggressively bid on the Binion Hoard coins plus Omaha Bank Hoard coins. I guess a hobby within the hobby.

Super 1888 Dollar - it would be a gotta have if I was bidding on that.

I found this coin in a Goldberg link. it looks similar but what I remember is more color in the bands, more area of brilliance on the obverse and brighter blue in the field.

    Heritage 1886

That Goldberg coin has some similarities to this Heritage 1886 MS65* Binion coin at $1,057. Both make the A level imo showing all the important color shades and a nice rainbow. The coin you are considering might be worthy.

If you end up posting some images, the guessing won't stop, but might become a little more educated.
