Double punched 9 and about a dozen other varieties. Member syl literally helped write the book on these.

Check out this site: Vicky Cents 1859

Lots of repunched letters in the legends but no true doubled dies.

    Gene, you are correct.
But what actually is the true meaning of "Doubled Die"?
does it have to be 100% doubled? or just the date doubled?
    or just the legends?
this DD things sure throughs me off balance.
I have a 1887 cent with nearly everything doubled....

I can post more detailed images of individual sections if needed.
    but, have a look...
    would this qualify as DD?

A double die occurs when the hub is pressed into the die a second time but is slightly rotated. A defining feature of a true double die is the corner of devices and serifs of letters have two distinct and separate points - look at the 1955 double die Lincoln cent).

Your 1887 coin is a machine or mechanical damaged piece caused by the dies not being tight in the machines which then allows them to twist and blur the corners and points - i.e. no separation.

    Excellent Article linky

    Gene,
Thank you so much for that.. What an education this article is for me.
I might ask for permission to use it in our coin club Journal.
however, there is another question which puzzles me:

how is it possible that only some sections are doubled in my coin, and others are not, fully realizing that it is MD?
If a die is not tight, would it not be logical that the effect caused by it would be visible all around?
the 1881 RTC doubling comes also to mind where in some cases onle some letters were doubled.
