Miguel Sano graded cards..

just reviewed the top fifty highest selling cards for him. Not 1 of the auto's was graded by psa. It was bgs all the way. i just don't get why the newer cards are so heavily stacked in favor of bgs but AROD, Jeter, Brady, Manning, etc all carry PSA premiums for auto's and non auto's. It just really confusing. Do they just mesh together at some point? Are the auto grades going to promote the bgs in the end? What year did Beckett take control of the graded cards and alike, does anyone know?

I have a pile of bgs aaron rodgers auto rookies is that better than psa or is psa still in control in 2005?

Is there any ryhme or reason to the graded auto cards?

BGS is just the go to with modern issues especially autos, much like PSA with vintage, and SGC with pre-war. It's just how it is.

Any thoughts as to approximately what year PSA handed the torch Beckett?

PSA still has by far the largest market share, so they haven't passed any torch. I would say the years of issue that are graded predominantly by BGS over PSA are about 2004-present. I could be off by a couple of years, but that's the gist.

Sano was just called up today so you might see a little spike in sales.

It's not so much they "handed the torch to Beckett" as much as the preference of the majority of collectors is SGC for 1941 and earlier issues, PSA for 1948-2000, and BGS for 2001 to the present. It doesn't mean a PSA 5 1952 Topps Mantle will significantly outpace an SGC 5 1952 Topps Mantle or a BGS 9.5 2011 Mike Trout Topps Update will out hammer a PSA 10 ad nauseum. Yeah, a PSA 10 1971 Topps common might out hammer a SGC 98 because of the regristry, but in your case and the case of universally popular cards and players (Cobb, Ruth, Mantle, Trout, Namath, Montana, Rodgers, Jordan, Lebron, etc..) the valuation difference between the three major TPG companies is minimal if non-existent. Every card is different. Every collector is different. Some collectors pay more because they want a little gold square with the auto grade on the front. Some collectors pay more because they want to input numbers online and boost their registry score. Some collectors pay more because they like black framed gaskets. This is primarily a vintage board and even if it wasn't owned by Collectors Universe they vast majority of members would still prefer PSA, just like the majority at Net54 prefer SGC, and the majority at Blowout prefer BGS.

finley - offers some thoughts, thanks.

so far we believe that beckett started being the slight choice of the collectors/investors maybe between 2001- 2004, especially for the autos. I looked up tom brady cards. about 50/50 for the top 50 sales. However, not one psa tom brady was an auto. Every auto in the top 50 highest sales of tom brady cards is graded by beckett.

so we have at least 50/50 grading for non-auto cards from around 2000 and up. We have a very large % of autos from 2000 and up in favor of beckett and the closer we get to 2015, beckett has almost the entire market on the autos (75% or more).

All this discussion or comments by me started with examining the 1993 auto's of AROD.

    psa 9 classic (4300) sold for 625
    psa 10 classic (4300) sold for 355
    bgs 9.5 with a 10 auto (4300) sold for 220
bgs 9 with 9 auto (4300) sold for 80 or so

So for that issue psa completely dominates the prices, but maybe not the total number graded. i think jeter is preferred most of the time to be graded by psa.

While I would agree that BGS is more popular with modern auto cards I would strongly disagree that pre-war collectors prefer SGC over PSA.

no doubt psa is the big player. sgc is a distant third in totality to bgs and psa.
