If you had $100,000 for one card ...

... which would you get?

Unless I had a $10-20 million collecting budget and 10x that net worth, I would never put that much into a single card, so it's a moot point without winning a huge lottery.

Not even if the card retailed for 150k?

Probably not, I'm more of a buy and hold kinda person, not really interested in flipping and don't even look at cards in that price range to know.

    T206 Wagner or 52T Mantle
  • 1. A m101 ruth rookie??
    2. Upgrade my 52 Mick??
    3. A shoeless Joe card (high grade e-90 or T210)
.....i'd rather buy several nice ones instead of just 1 card.
    Collecting RC's (mostly 40-60's)

I have similar thoughts to that. If I somehow ended up with $100,000 in one fell swoop I might spend $500 of that on a card or cards. I'd have much bigger fish to fry with $100,000 than cards though. For one a shot, nope. But put me in a higher tax bracket, with far more disposable income over the haul then I would give some thought to $100 k on a few cards. image

I'd go for an e107 Wagner, Matty or Cy Young. M101 Ruth would in the mix as well. I love dreaming. image

I'm sure i'd go for a 52 Mantle, a 9 1954 Aaron (I have no idea what a 9 Aaron rookie goes for), or the best Jackie Robinson rookie I could get.

Why don't you buy DM's Ruth sporting news rookie on eBay then?
That's a good example of buying the card and not the holder.
  • This is all very subjective territory. That said........I think that is a horrible '''7'''. For that moolah, I best be getting a solid blue background. That blue is what makes that card in my mind.

ETA......the funky top left edge notwithstanding. Graders are...after all...fallible. If they weren't, no card would ever be successfully reviewed or bought back.

I'm sorry, but I won't discuss a business matter like that with someone like yourself that I caught making up lies. Your credibility is shot with me.

If I owned it, the first things that would draw my eye every time I looked at it would be the funky looking top left edge and those white specks in the blue.

So far, every card mentioned is a baseball one. Interesting.

If I had $100,000 to spend on a non-baseball card, I think I'd be shooting for an SGC 98, BVG 9.5, or even the PSA 10 example of the Gretzky rookie, even though I think the PSA 10 is > $100k now.

Truth is, I don't know many non-baseball cards that are $100k+ even though I know there are some out there.

SoS, I don't think you're going to last very long here.

Now, back on topic. First, that's a hideous Mantle 7. Tough to narrow it down to just one card. I have zero interest in most of the big-dollar cards. Don't want a '52 Mick, or a '86 Jordan, or a Ruth. It'd have to be Dodgers related, of course, and I'm not sure any Dodgers card exists that would command that kind of price. Maybe a '55 Koufax in a 10, or the '53 Bowman Reese in a 10. I doubt either of those would command $100K, though.

Why is that? I am not the one who started all of this. That would be Warriors. He told lies on here about me and I caught him and quoted his lies before he was able to change them. If you want to be critical of anyone, why isn't it the guy who was caught doing that, trying to fan the flames and lie about a fellow member? Please learn all of the facts and understand the Griffey comments by Warriors earlier in this thread ties back to the other lies. It was his sly way to take a cheap shot and try to stir things back up.

    Ryan rookie PSA 10.

It would be interesting to see what the owner of the only one in existence would sell it for.

If he has money to burn then $100K might not be enough.

I'd try to find some late 60's and early 70's (preferably 1971) baseball unopened boxes.

Edit: Sorry, didnt realize it was for a card image....but I'd still choose the unopened!

I bought the Ryan 10 from the guy who graded it. I had it in my collection for about a year before I sold it to someone who turned around and sold it a few months later. Everyone that has owned it has done pretty well. 100k is less than a quarter of what it would take to own that particular card.

And regarding the 52 Mantle 7 that I had listed, I love coming on here and seeing people bash stuff I have for sale. image

I bet the PSA 10 '52 Andy Pafko would go for $100K if it ever came up again. It went for, what? Almost $84,000 last time? With no PSA 9, that 10 is probably north of $100K now.

Yes, that could be the case. Hadn't thought of the Pafko. Not an iconic Dodgers card, though.

I loved your idea of a T-3. If the thread title was for cards instead of 'card', then I could get more creative. I'd love to do a wall display of a slabbed T-3 Dodgers set. That would be pretty stinkin' cool.

The value on the PSA 6 Mantle. Ill give up the little but of centering and "keep the change" from the 100k any day.

Hey Evan, the condition of the paperclip you had on eBay was so much worse than the "slightly used" designation you gave it. AND the scan sucked too. Perhaps if it was described as "game-used" I would have bought it.

It's well within PSA 7 spec and I think you'd be hard pressed to find one with better centering. It is unfortunate that he's actually looking up at the upper left corner that's the most messed up.

Regardless of the "criticism" coming from these boards, I highly doubt Evan will have a difficult time selling this card.

I like the clarity of the scan BTW. Evan, what scanner do you use?

It sold earlier today. I'm mostly a fan of the card's centering.
The scanner I use is a Canon CanoScan 9000F MKII. It has worked very well for scanning cards.

I know, right? It's not like you posted the original listing. I think we should try to avoid posting links to other seller's cards and then beating the card down. Not very respectful of the seller, especially a known member of this board. Great news you sold it!
