Set completed! 1955 Topps (scan heavy)

I started this set last June. At 206 cards, it is small enough to complete quickly. There are a few challenges in terms of pricey cards (Clemente & Koufax rookie cards, with Roberto being a high number) and tough to find in nice condition cards (Dusty Rhodes, Hank Bauer, Bill Consolo and Harry Agganis proved toughest for me).

The set started out when I bought a lot of 20 on a whim. The only cards I already had were Hank Aaron and Monte Irvin. From the start, I set out to collect the HOFers (plus Hodges) in PSA holders and everyone else ungraded. The Dusty Rhodes card (#1 in the set) came in a BVG holder and looks so nice that I decided to leave it in. The last card I needed was Hank Bauer – I just got it in the mail today.

In terms of condition, the slabbed cards generally grade EX 5, with a few 4’s and two 6's. Clemente is a 2 (good for now, maybe upgraded some day) and the Koufax is a 4.5. I was shooting for around a 5 equivalent with the raw cards. Some are better, a very few have some minor creasing.

This set was a diversion while I continue the very slow process of completing the 1971 Topps Greatest Moments set (I now have 51 of the 55 cards). It’s been a blast all the way. If you are looking to build a colorful, small set that is attainable, I’d highly recommend 1955 Topps.

Following are some scans, maybe 35-40% of the set:

Congrats!! 1955 is my all time favorite Topps set. I love the pic with the stack of raw cards.

Congrats. Great set! Two things I really like about your set are that it's mostly raw, and that you put the HOFers plus Hodges in slabs. I know he's debatable, but always happy to see someone else include him with the others as I do.

Good luck completing the 71GM set.

Looking forward to that one too.

    Thanks for sharing.

Great looking set. And that's the way I build my sets as well: raw commons and slabbed key cards. Well done.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Beautiful looking set. I like how you went graded for the stars and raw for the commons - that is a great idea that I might have to copy.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Thanks for the feedback, all. When I told my wife I got the last card I needed, she asked if I was going to sell the set now

I'm sorry Daniel, I left your phone number out and my wife must have called it thinking it was an eBay seller. image

Congratulations on completing the set. Always nice to finish one off.
