Lidstrom, Fedorov, and Karamanos in the Hockey HOF! Break out the UD French Boxes!

I'm not much of a hockey fan now, but I was a big fan when I lived in Detroit in the 1990's. I wished that Fedorov didn't leave for the Ducks, it would have been nice to see him retire a Red Wing.

His 1990-91 OPC Premier RC was probably the most popular card in Detroit for 3-4 years.

Don't forget Pronger and Housley as well.

Housley is a real stretch IMO. He put up big points in an era when everyone put up big numbers, but he was pretty one dimensional and didn't really win anywhere. Only contended for the Norris once, never made first team AS. A strong fart could knock him off the puck. Not very impressed.

Even Fedorov is an iffy pick, he had an amazing 5-6 year run and won a Hart trophi but really declined fast. He wasn't much of a factor his last 10 years - I think he only broke 70 points once in his last 12 years.

    Not sure either really belongs.

I've been buying 1990-91 OPC Premier boxes when they come up for sale. I know they aren't rare, but the price is cheap and it is filled with HOF'ers. The big knock on the set was that Lindros was not included, I guess time does cure all ills.

For those of you that don't know, Pete Karamanos owned a tech company called Compuware in Detroit. I think he owned the Hartford Whalers at one time. He is a big supporter of youth hockey in Detroit, I think Lindros made his debut with a Compuware team.

Big hockey day for Detroit fans!

I compare Fedorov to Mike Modano. While Modano was a better goal scorer and assist guy, Fedorov was probably one of the best skaters and defensive forwards of his era. He won two Selke trophies and his career +/- is over double Modano's.

I know there were always complaints that he underachieved compared to his talent and that after he married Kournikova, he lost his focus. Fair criticisms in my opinion, but his peak and 3 Stanley Cups push him over the edge.

I agree with you on Housley, I never thought he was a top level defenseman in any season.

While I think the way Karmanos handled the Hartford situation was terrible, the Compuware youth hockey program he started here in Detroit has been very successful. Many future NHLers have come through that program. Not to mention his 25 years of owning his OHL franchise. Two OHL championships and a lot of players that made it to the NHL. Also a couple of future NHL coaches in Paul Maurice and Peter DeBoer.

Anyone know if Angela Ruggiero has any cards?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

That 1990 Upper Deck Hockey set was one of the nicest sets ever in any sport.

I'm still looking for a 1990-91 OPC Premier case for my collection. I saw one a few years ago on ebay and none since.
