psa dna question (sticker question answered)

does a previous sticker affixation effect the grade if you wanted to have a psa dna card graded?

basically asking if a card has a jsa sticker on the back can the card receive a max grade of 5 or something along those lines?

or does it get a free pass considering it's another type of authenticity?

ie. a jsa sticker, a nolan ryan foundation sticker, etc

I've never sent them in, but when the question was asked previously on these boards, the answer was always "a free pass".

I have a 1988 Maxx Dale Earnhardt autographed and authenticated by JSA with a sticker on the back. I submitted it to PSA/DNA and had the autograph graded and slabbed. It came back a 10.
The sticker will not be a problem.
  • Thank you guys for answering this question. It's one I have wondered about as well. The info is appreciated.

was the 10 an auto grade or a card grade.

I am asking about a card grade and would a sticker on the card effect the grade...

    confusing, I know...

The 10 is the grade for the autograph

ok, yes I am looking just to have an "authenticated" for the autograph, but have the card get the highest possible grade for the card itself...

I think it does effect the grade of the card. I passed on a few Ric Flair cards, because the guy had a JSA sticker put on the back.

Oh, ok. Does anyone know how one could find out if it affects the grade of the card? Would a call to PSA be able to answer this, or would this be something only the graders would be able to answer? I apologize if this is a silly question, but I too would like to know because I have some cards with stickers that I would like to have graded too. If they ding the card for the sticker, it would be a waste of money to send them in for the card to be graded.

Yes a call to PSA would be able to answer this. PSA is grading it so of course they would be able to answer your question.

What I was meaning was I didn't know if customer service would be able to answer this since they are not the ones actually grading the cards.

Anyway, if I get time on Friday, I may give them a call.
  • Please post the answer when you find out. I've been wondering this myself.

My past experience from subbing hundreds of cards is that an authentication sticker on the back has zero impact on a card grade.

I have tried to call and ask twice and have explained clearly (I thought) as to the question and got nowhere. if you happen to get a straight answer, please post. was

hoping that someone here has already crossed this bridge by actually submitting here and knows the outcome....

I have graded quite a few as well and not seen any impact. That said, all of the cards with stickers that I was grading were in the 4,5,6 range. I haven't graded any 8,9,10's with stickers.

thanks alex! did any of those cards seem worthy of higher grades?

    Begsu1013,

See above. And yes, I have had cards graded 8,9,10 that had authentication stickers on them.

  • Agreed with others. No impact on grade.

finally got the answer direct from psa:

    Hello Bob,

My name is Michael with PSA Customer Support, and I would be more than happy to assist you with your questions regarding our services today!

This is definitely a very good question. When grading cards, typically any sticker will affect the grade, and we may only be able to authenticate it. However, in instances where it is a certification sticker from a well known authenticator, it should not affect the grade whatsoever. Please let me know if this requires further explanation.

For remaining questions, you may contact PSA Customer Service at info@psacard.com or (800) 325-1121. Thank you for reaching out to PSA, & I hope you have a great day![I/]
