Ugh - 1989 Upper Deck...why do you hate me so....

I opened a box of 1989 Upper Deck Low series several years ago and did not hit a Griffey Jr. or a Nolan Ryan.

Over the past several months I would add a random 89 upper deck low series box to my orders from BBCE. I decided to rip one of them last night. I never like taking off the BBCE wrapping on a box, but this one was sure to hold some gem mint cards!

Anyway, so ripped the entire box and not a single Griffey or Nolan Ryan. Ugh. So frustrating.

I still have 4 sealed boxes left and one is FASC. Trying my best not to rip them JUST to actually pull a Griffey.....

Comments

  • I usually get two to 3 out of a single box. I recall someone here pulled 5 one time.

On the plus side, if this was 1989 and you pulled out a couple of Canseco's, you would be a happy guy right now lol

Just do it. Pop that Griffey cherry, then you wont have the urge anymore.

Haha! That WOULD solve the problem....

  • I opened 8 boxes from a sealed case a few months back. Got (5) Griffeys in a box two different times. I got 15 total Griffeys if I remember correctly.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago in the last BBCE group rip. Low series with not a single Griffey. I was pretty bummed about that box...I think just threw all the cards back in the box and haven't looked at it since.
  • Busted a full case from krukcards about 2 years ago. First 2 boxes not a single Griffey, Johnson or Biggio. Was about to call and raise all kinds of heck. Third box had 7 Griffeys. One box had about 15 Johnsons. Collation is redonkulous.

I've opened only one single pack of '89 UD in my life (it was about 15 year ago), and yes, it had a Griffey!

    Same here.

I've opened 3 FASC boxes. One box was devoid of Griffeys and the others had a single Griffey apiece.

Those nice blue boxes really look tempting, almost with the allure of a Siren's song, but I'm done taking that abuse.

I opened 10 boxes (not FASC to my knowledge) this past January that I bought from different sellers. Think I had 5-6 Griffey, 5-6 Johnson, 3-4 Biggio, 6-7 Sheffield, 5-6 Smoltz

My story from upper deck was back in 1989 I opened 2 boxes and got 1 Griffey and 40 YES 40 Don Aase cards. 22 in one box and 18 in the other. Boy how I wish those were Griffey's...............

First time I opened 89 upper deck I got two Griffeys in one pack and that's all I got in the box

Just opened another box that I added onto my last BBCE order. NO GRIFFEY AGAIN! Ugh. I don't think I have it in me to try a 3rd time.....

I have some FASC boxes and am always tempted to rip them. I have a few 9's of Griffey
So I look at them to ease the urge to rip the boxes. It has worked so far but not sure how much longer it will
  • I opened up a box recently and I pulled 2 Griffeys, 1 Johnson and a Sheffield. I also pulled out 22 doubles out of one box!! It was insane and madly annoying. A no name rookie. Wish those were all Griffeys. I ended up selling both Griffeys the day he got in and made out almost even. I was happy.

I've ripped at least a case of UD low numbers over the last 3-4 years and have yet to self sub a PSA10. Ton of 9's, but never the 10. I will keep trying.

Leave them sealed and buy a Griffey. I know it's fun pulling a big card out of a pack yourself, but the economics of this scenario aren't worth it.

True. I actually already have a PSA 10 Griffey. I just wanted that rush of pulling one. Oh well, maybe I'll get another wild hair in a few months...
  • I've opened total a little over 3 boxes of 89 UD and I've never pulled a Griffey. Probably those pack searchers back in 89 beat me to it. I also went thru 2 rack and 1 cello box of 86 Topps back in 86 and never pulled a Vince Coleman RC. Looking back that must have been a blessing in disguise.

I've opened one box, the first pack I opened had a Griffey (came back a PSA8).

BTW, what does FASC stand for?

    "From a sealed case"...

Always looking for OPC "tape intact" baseball wax boxes, and 1984 OPC baseball PSA 10's for my set. Please PM or email me if you have any available.

    I feel ya.

Look at how many 10s 9999rbush has sold/listed recently. Unfreaking believable.

    Thanks,

Yea I've noticed David. Not sure how he is pulling that off. Frankly I'm scared to even wonder how he is pulling that off, but dang does he have a serious load of PSA 10 cards. Things that make you go HMMMM........

I purchased a sealed box about 10 years ago, and pulled ZERO rookie cards. I mean not one Rookie... not even Luis Medina. After that experience, I was done buying 1989 Upper Deck all together.
