It's only courteous. And SO easy to do since resizing a .jpg is dead simple in Paint.
Unless of course the owner of the image is silly enough to trust a hosting site and doesn't keep his OWN images on file.
It would be nice if people did take their images to a reasonable size.
Either that or tweak the CU software to reject any post that overruns the width of the standard thread.
For those talking about the storage of images, never trust someone else.
I just bought 3 more external hard drives last week. Two 1.5 TB and one 2 TB. I plan on buying another 2 TB next week. I already have 4 other older external hard drives as well.
When I bought the 3 drives last week, the salesman said why don't you just buy one 5 TB drive instead? I said no effing way, lose that drive and lose your images. I have all of my images backed up on 5 separate hard drives right now, and on the computer and on the web.

ya, this is why i am bringing it up, mainly.
i have lots of different reasons to have the same image(s) be diff size dimensions and keeping multiple sizes of an image, in a database as laege as mine isntoo much; also being the 21st century, to not have this basic, yet very important function is a bit odd.
pcgs forum code restrictions would be a happy medium. i simply skip threads i have to scoll right to read. maybe if it just is a little over, ill read but very few are just a little over.
the code solves almost all of this problem. i say almost as there are "veterans" that still dont/cant? post a link.
that is another subject though.

if you havent/dont, you can reduce file size kb/mb with photoscape/vso etc by more than half and usually lose no noticeable quality, to the human eye.
photoscape i only know how to do 1 at a time but it works gr8.
vso/light image resizer lets me do entire folders but dimensions need to be close to the same for each image.
soon as i figure out how to do entire folders, at 25-35%, with diff dimensions, im gonna be in flippin' heaven!
the folders with near-same dimensions, being bulk resized has worked fantastically, for many reasons.
professional-quality images, individual obv/rev, at 1500x1500 should be around 150-250kb aka 1/4mb, perhaps smaller. depends on how much reduction is used. one needs just do a few test runs to find the desired sweet spot(s).

In your photobucket library click on the UPLOAD tab at the top of the page and you will see a large box with dashed lines. In the upper right hand corner of it click on the gear icon to get UPLOAD OPTIONS. Here you can choose the size which will remain your default for all future uploads until you change it again. I find that 800 X 600 works great for forum posts. Play around posting to the testing forum until you find a size that works for you.

<< <i>In photobucket the larger upload size you choose the larger it will appear in the forum. The original size of what you choose to upload also comes into play.

Now this information helps very much! Thank you.
I still can't figure out how to upload an image from photobucket without the header info showing in the post as well. Guess I'll figure that out at some point.

I must have posted about this a dozen times.
I'll be terse this time: From PB, go to "settings", "albums" and uncheck the "link back to albums" box.
I always resize images before uploading. IMO anything larger than 600x600 is unnecessary and annoying.
Lance.
So I'd prefer to upload large pics and have the browser resize them like normally happens, and retain the quality, then to lose so much quality by resizing the pics down to 1100ox and then posting here.

In photobucket copy the IMG code for the picture and post it directly into your forum post. If you do not see an IMG code selection after uploading the pic to photobucket go into your preferences and choose to show it. There are a number of different codes that can be chosen for you to copy and paste to your application. The forum uses the IMG code.

Here's 800x600...
I keep a full-resolution PS file and a reduced 1200 pixel viewing file for each coin I shoot.

The problem stated is the link info appearing with the image in a forum post, not how to post an image. Again, uncheck the "link back to albums" box in your Photobucket settings and the extraneous html text will not appear with your image.

<< <i>With 30Mbps connections and faster becoming the norm, I'd prefer to post larger file sizes with better quality, and have the browser resize. I use >>
that is fine but you aren't looking at the bigger picture. tablet, phones, ram, bandwidth restrictive plans, heat, battery/power usage etc etc.
to really drive the point home; when people visit pages, generally they have no idea what the total kb/mb etc they are d/l until it is nearly too late, so in essence, you are forcing large files on people w/o knowing in advance. sure they could quickly leave the page(s) if images/files are slow to load but why not just do it right to begin with?
im also using my methods to free-up significant amounts on my various hdd and the quality is there.
ive resized mark goodmans images to less than 200kb at 1200x1200 as well as my own. and if the quality is too low to be accepted, all need be done is to bump up the reduction size. these are 25% of original, so plenty of room to move up. ive done it with coinfacts images as well that are in my files.
if that cant get ya where ya need to go, think about the whole process and its individual parts from you clicking the mouse, all the servers, power plants, cables, satellites etc our data traverses to get to others,
my version is the extreme one but a happy medium would probably be 350-500kb per image, surely not 1.5mb.
1200x1200 on my 1376x768 tablet with the bookmarks closed permits viewing w/o horizontal scroll but 1000x1000 is prob better for this forum.
goodman - 150kb
newman - 180kb

LOL ....... all of my 2500 images are saved as 70 to 100 mb files. I like huge files. They can always be sized down.

i understand. im more referring to the sharing of images. keeping the original images for backup is another matter entirely.
i just figured out how to resize in kb/mb for different dimensions, yay!
here is an example where this reduction comes in handy. the images load ridiculously fast on pretty much any device post 1999. - most of the images in this overlay thread are <100kb. i wonder how much smaller they can go and still be good quality. brb
gawd, i remember when ram broke 1gb as well as the processor surmounting 1ghz.
now if i could just figure out how to resize images en masse, even in muti-layered folders as a whole new copy and then just delete the old one. how awesome would that be.

yup. they went from <100kb to <50kb, except a couple.
hmm, i guess small IS the new big.

Thanks Lance, that's all the info I needed. FWIW: I did search that exact topic a few times but couldn't find anything remotely helpful
