How high can Mantle cards go, what about others?

Since I collect Mantles and rarely look at some of the other major hofers, I'm blown away at how difficult it is to obtain beautiful high end mantles PSA 8 and higher. Are there other players that are getting off the chart prices?

What you noted seems to be happening across all the great players and all grades, actually. Lots of age groups in the hobby at this time, I think. It def ain't any easier going looking for beautiful low grade Micks, as well, as the grades themselves mean the cards will have a problem, so there's the challenge of finding an example with technical as opposed to eye appeal problems, and then the challenge of prevailing at auction. It seems we collectors are all living in an age where there is no such thing as a steal or bargain! image

Did anyone see the hammer price on the 1956 Mickey Mantle PSA-8.5 in the Probstein auction ending last night...I will give you time to be seated....

    $17600.00

That is how high...high end Mantle cards can go!

That was a stunning card. I was watching that one. Really a super clean example.

There's simply no limit. He's the hallmark of the industry, the name synonymous with greatness and what is good in the game.

Perhaps Babe Ruth is more "known" but he was more dirty as a person IMO. Mantle's pro career, life and legacy are all reasons why his cards will always be at the top of the collecting game.

It's never too early to invest in a solid Mantle.

Ruth and Mantle will always be right at the top of the baseball card hobby. Even in Orlando's book, the 1952 Mantle and the M101 Babe Ruth Rookie were considered the two best cards in the hobby right after the T206 Wagner. That Lou Gehrig guy's no slouch either-- and the only saint of the bunch image

I watched that one with interest since it is the first one to publicly sell since February, and I am very pleased to see the results. I thought the one sold by PWCC back in February was a nicer example all around.

Probstein's had very nice centering, but a couple of corners looked off for an 8.5 grade. Still a great card and my chances of picking up another 8.5 just went down - or up if you are looking at price image

This card was around $3300-3800 at the National last year in an 8 and now it is selling for $5k consistently. I can see it at $7-8k in a couple of years.
