Autograph grading question (red flip)

I have a 1980 Magic Bird Erving card that is autographed by Magic Johnson and is currently in a blue flip holder. My goal is to get Bird and Erving to sign and ultimately I think I want to get it in a red flip holder after all three signatures are on the card. Steiner sports is supposed to have a private signing with Larry Bird next month. They say that they can (or will) place a hologram on the item as a way to prove authenticity. So my question is two parts:

1. Will having a hologram of this nature affixed to the card make the card ungradable or lower the grade (e.g. will this limit the card to a red flip authentic grade or MK qualifier)? Or does PSA ignore the hologram when grading the card?

2. If the hologram does detract from the future grade of the card, can I simply request for Steiner to not affix any hologram to the card since I plan on having the card authenticated by PSA anyway?

Thanks to any of the auto experts out there who can help with my questions.

BTW, this is my card. Any guesses on the grade if I were to submit as a red flip?

Please don't take this personally, but when did Magic's signature get that lazy? You can't even make out the J in his last name.

Did you get it signed by him or did you buy the card already signed?
  • PSA will ignore the hologram when grading. You can decline it from Steiner - simply include a note requesting it not be affixed.

Also, PM me when you get a chance. There are much cheaper Bird options then Steiner coming up soon. Thanks!

Why a red flip? IF that is paper loss above Magic's hand, at best the card will grade a 2. Thus I suggest trying to find the card already signed by all 3. Unless you enjoy the thrill in completing a task of getting all 3. Good Luck.

Not sure what is up with Magic's auto on the card. I got it through a private signing. I wish he would have used a thinner sharpie. That may have helped with legibility. Having to fit the auto on to a third of the card may cause him to shorten his signature.

Thanks for the info Casey. I will PM you about the other Bird signings.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will have to check that out when I get back to WA to look at it closer. I hope it is not paper loss. If not for that I think the card would get a 7 (possible PD qualifier). Here is a picture of the card before I sent it to be slabbed (I sent in both the Baylor and the Magic Bird in the recent blue flip group sub) and you can see the white splotch is not there.

  • I've seen a number of these triple Bird/Magic/Dr. J cards, and that Magic auto is completely normal for the issue.

Looks like sticker residue on the flip and I concur on the 7.

Casey--Yes, I agree on the Magic auto. For this card it looks normal. I still wish that they would have used a thinner sharpie as I think it makes the auto/sig look less crowded and more clean.

Kyle--Thanks, I hope you are right on both of your statementsimage
