Proof Liberty Nickel: grade = PCGS PR66 CAM

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,630 ✭✭✭✭✭
Bought this coin over the weekend from NFC. It's not plus-graded, non-CAC, PCGS recent holder. I don't have it yet, so I don't know if it's as nice as the photos suggest, or perhaps an optimistic picture. But I will know shortly. In the mean time, let's have some fun guessing numerical grade and CAM/DCAM/Not CAM designation.

Nice contrast! I bet it will look great in person.

    I'll guess PR65DCAM

looks nicer than the 67CAM (NGC) they have now of the same year, so I will guess 66CAM

I see at least 66 DCAM too.
Either those are great pics or it's an awesome coin.
    I hope both!

65DCAM. The devices, face and V, have an unusual graininess that does not look natural to my eye.

65 CAM....even though it looks more like a 66 DCAM to me.

That frosting almost looks unreal. Is it real? Have to agree with the earlier comment on graininess, funny texture, cameo coming off, etc. If not PCGS holdered it's a coin I'd have been afraid to buy. I'd still want the CAC sticker though. I'd bet PCGS was a bit conservative on the grade.

I really want to see the coin in hand (under microscope ?). I think the photo is a little juicy on the contrast. Maybe just a photogenic coin that caught the light just right. Anyway, it resides in a PCGS 66 CAM holder. One would have to guess the frosting is not so bold and grainy in person, and the frost break on the "V": killed the DCAM designation. I have never returned a coin to this seller, and 5/5 coins I received from them were solid or nice for the grade. I still own all 5 of them.

Real cameo proofs have satin luster on the frosting, often with a few tiny flyspecks that landed on the original surface over the years. Altered coins have no luster on the frosting and no flyspecks or toning splotches on the fake frosting. I have owned California Special Morgans, and I also think I will figure it out if the coin was lasered. After all, I am a research scientist and I have numerous expensive microscopes at my disposal. Stay tuned. image

Ron... I was going to say 66 DCam... The frosty devices and the black mirrors made me drool.
The date is my Grandmother's Birthyear and I have a Pr 66 ( no Cam ) ... After seeing yours,
I should spend mine !! LOL image

Wow. That's so frosty it looks fake!

(I mean that in a good way. When your classic 19th century type coin looks like a modern silver round, you've got a helluva proof.)

A most interesting coin. It looks like the mint really sandblasted the dies and then polished the fields like crazy. Could it be fake frosting? I don't have any experience with proofs of this era so i don't know but I would certainly like to!

I will wait for decent images before making any guesses or comments.

I will say though, NFC in general sells some nice stuff.

    Congrats, and I hope it's a show-stopper in hand!

We all agree the images are hard to judge. That means I will have to break out the camera when it arrives. Will update this one next week, for better or for worse.

  • WOW! Looks like a stunning DCAM. As to grade, it's sometimes hard to tell from images (e.g. hairlines) but it appears to be a 66. At least.
