I've been to this show a number of times over the past year. There is usually a pretty good selection of 50s-70s vintage, both raw and graded. If you're looking for a particular star card, you'll probably find many copies to choose from, especially Mantles '56-later (and a few '51-55s usually pop up also). One or two sellers have some nice high-end vintage sets, and there are a number of sellers with low- and mid-grade vintage sets in binders, so it's a pretty good show for setbuilders. I've been putting together a '53 Bowman set in EX pretty much just from attending this show. If you're looking for prewar cards it can be hit or miss; sometimes there's a lot, sometimes it's pretty sparse. I'm speaking mostly for baseball stuff, because that's what I collect - not sure how strong it is for other sports.
However, if you're making a long drive, I would strongly suggest that you wait for the July show. The upcoming June show is a 2-day show that also has toys & other collectibles, so only about half of the square footage is taken up by sportscard vendors. The July show is a 3-day show just for sportscards & memorabilia, so there will be a lot more to choose from. The 3-day shows usually attract more out-of-town vendors with higher quality stuff.
Look for the Lime Green dealer- Uncle Dick. Tons of raw to complete sets and quality vintage. Great guy just to talk to about cards and life. Tell him Kirk sent you.
Thanks guys!! Not sure I can make it to the July show so I will probably make it a Fathers Day weekend with my daughter and head to Raleigh. Yes I know Uncle Dick well. Good to know he will be there. He always has lots of stuff. I assume Greg Dragos will be there since he lives in Raleigh?
I went to the Raleigh show last July and its too close to the National. Several dealers that normally showed up didn't. I will tell you that I have been to the Chantilly show 3 times in July and have found it to be decent.
I am in New Bern, NC. I have never been due to military work commitments; however, I am likely to attend. What are the hours and location? How much for a table? Who is the POC for the show? Meatloaf
Anyone else end up going yesterday? I didn't find much of what I was looking for (mostly prewar), but did pick up a few nice '53s for my set. These were all that made it after looking through a few hundred...centering and registration on this set make me want to bang my head against a wall.
I stopped by Saturday. There were several dealers with vintage singles for set builders. There was also a decent selection of vintage stars that were overpriced. I only saw a couple 80s unopened boxes, 83 Topps baseball, 84 Donruss baseball and 87 Topps football cello. I didn't buy anything. James
