to rip or not to rip....86 fleer basketball

2 hand collated sets bought in 1986 by a primarily baseball card collector and put away for almost 30 years. What lies inside the cellophane wrapped sets sold by the local card store in 1986. An offcenter or dinged Jordan? A PSA 10 Jordan? A PSA 10 Johnny Moore? Might be time to open and see what lies inside. Or maybe wait until 2016, 30 year anniversary. Some other 70s sets bought at same time and never opened either.

    Probably missing the Jordan IME

yes, the drawback of never checking the set back in 1986. The dealer could have pulled the Jordans. But why would he pull a .50 cent card?

Dealers were throwing/guving away 86 Fleer back then. No way the Jordan was pulled. It was the card equivalent of a common.

For me, two of anything usually puts one at risk.

I suspect the MJ is there, but nice to confirm. Also, nice to know general condition of all, as it then may be worth seeing what's in the second set.

I'd love to see what's inside.

    Good luck whatever you do!

I don't get the debate. You're not ripping anything. These weren't factory sealed. They are opened, handled product and when you go through them they will still be opened, handled product. There is zero to lose by going thru them and zero to gain by leaving them in some random dude's Saran Wrap. In short (too late for that): let's see what you've got!

Is this a "whats in the safe?" thread?

As mentioned nothing is gained from leaving this wrapped, if anything the corners are being damaged more by handling them as they are.

If these are yours OP then it is time to open them instead of playing a guessing game.

    It's time to open them!

Rip - hard to sell as is, as any buyer could say no Jordan and you'd have little recourse as you don't know yourself and they aren't "factory" sets.

Cool though, but a nearly riskless rip, IMHO.

Cool to see! Definitely brings back the days

I wouldn't hesitate to bust these open! The thrill to see the centering, corners, and edges would be just as equal to ripping the packs
I'd believe you know the sequence though beforehand haha

Reminds me of a 1977 Topps Baseball set that I picked up. Made straight from vending and then wrapped in wax paper
Of course it says in pencil "MINT" lol

Rip. Love these 'finds' from your own PC. Great memories if the way it used to be.

Those Kareems are way off center. If that shop is still open, you should see if you can get a refund.

    That was hilarious!

OP- Seems like a silly question to me....I'm amazed they aren't ripped already.

This was labeled "MINT" in 1986??? Cards fresh out of that year's packs were labeled "MINT"?

And just the fact that the word "MINT" was even used back in 1986 like this seems weird.

As others have said, zero downside to ripping. So good luck. If you can wait until 2016 you have more patience than me.

Why is one set taller than the other??

I say one Jordan is missing with other stars

And if my calculations are correct, the one Jordan is severely OC t/b

Obviously a guaranteed let down. Don't rip now, it will be mistake

This is a classic case of Schrödinger's cat:
Schrödinger's cat is a famous illustration of the principle in quantum theory of superposition, proposed by Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. Schrödinger's cat serves to demonstrate the apparent conflict between what quantum theory tells us is true about the nature and behavior of matter on the microscopic level and what we observe to be true about the nature and behavior of matter on the macroscopic level -- everything visible to the unaided human eye.
It could be said that the set contains both a PSA 10 Jordan and no Jordan at all.

LOL, never imagined that would make it to these boards....
  • Great episode of Silicon Valley. Not such an accurate application of Schroedinger's Cat (which was actually invented as a way of demonstrating the absurdity of quantum uncertainty at macro levels)!

Edit: But, yeah, rip it, bro!

    I thought this was funny.

But in seriousness, you should actually open the packs.
