New member to the forum and PSA + Clemente cards

Hello all. My name is Don. I've been collecting baseball cards since the 70's. I quit in the mid 80's when it became way too popular.
My main collection is Roberto Clemente. I finally finished gathering all of his cards from '55 to '73. The rookie card is very nice, but bad off-center. Good enough for now though.
Now my interest is back, and collecting certainly has changed. It seems mostly about the grading and centering now. That's fine. I'll go with it. That's why I signed up for PSA and submitted 15 cards last week. I'll hopefully post some good results when they get back. For some reason, I seem focused on 1975 and a little on 1976-1980 cards now.
I'm also enjoying reading the messages on this forum. So much information, great conversations, and so many amazing cards. Great tips as well.
Cheers!

Welcome aboard. That first submission is always sobering, but best of luck with it!

Welcome, Don. You will find a nice wealth of knowledge here. I too am fond of the 1975-1980 Topps Baseball issues.

Thank you very much. Yes, but sobering might be a good thing. I have many cards that look great until I use a magnifying glass on them. Incredible price guide value changes between 9's and 10's.

Thank you. I'm also a Reds fan, like you. I'm hoping for some good grading on the '75 Bench & Rose cards I just submitted. What a tough set under the magnifying glass.

Welcome! The 1975s are a great set, and the exact same place I started when I first got back heavily into the hobby. And best of luck with your first foray into grading; above all, if you love your card and the grade is harsh, do not let an external opinion get you down image

    Hiya Don.

Best of luck in your collecting.

Clemente? How did you pick him? I went to college in Ohio and followed the Pirates during his last years there - incredible guy and player! I don't have any of his early Topps cards - wish I did.

In fact, I'm in the market for a well centered 63F - mine is near OC to be honest. I've always liked his 61T card - haven't looked at it in many moons.

Please post some of your favorite cards when you get the chance. image

This thread definitely needs some pics. Clemente was one who I started picking up when I got back into the hobby a few years ago, but got put on a back burner while putting together my Rose, Bench, and Larkin collections. Mike, is your 63F this OC?
    image
And mine has a bonus or defect on the back, depending on how you want to look at it...

You are right! It does need pics. Thank you for starting. Great Clemente cards there! I'm trying to find the picture I took of the set. If I can't find it, I'll just lay them out for a new photo shoot.
This forum also taught me that scanning is so much better than trying to take photos of cards.

Thank you very much. Started with Clemente when I was 15. Traded a '69 to a "friend" for a common '63 (because I didn't know any better). My father found out and told me to get it back. So that same "friend" took my '69 Reggie Jackson in trade for the Clemente back. (again, I didn't know any better). Neither of the cards were mint, but lesson learned quickly.
Flea markets got me most of the Clemente's in the 80's. I'll post a picture soon.
"Incredible guy and player" Exactly as I am always told about him.

  • I always loved the '71 Kellogg's 3D clemente. I've been back into collecting myself for a little while now and just started posting here. I remember that year was the most rare of the 3-D sets except the really early one you almost never see. nice cards you have of the guy with maybe the greatest arm ever.

Kyle, that 63F with the sticker on back ROCKS!!

Welcome Don! My favorite threads are player collector threads, so make sure you start one for your Clemente collection! My guy is Yaz (if you couldn't tell).

Thank you all for the great welcomes. I edited my title to add Clemente.
I just took this picture, but forgot the Kellogs cards, a 1 ounce silver bar, and a few others.
You'll get the idea of the collection. Sorry about the photo quality. I'll probably pick up the '64 standup this week, then try harder on a good photo to place in the collection forum. Nothing newer than '73 in the photo except the large button that says "In Memory of A Courageous Human Being".
The only graded card was a recent pickup to replace one that was in bad shape.

That is a very nice collection. Thanks for sharing the picture. Definitely a worthy player and person to collect. Seeing your collection got me to thinking what a banner year 1955 was for RC's of players who were/are fine examples of athletes who also were great people: Clemente, Killebrew and Koufax.

    Hey there Kyle

Mine is part of my "8" set - how this didn't get an OC may be a mystery to some?

You can get this card centered like this relatively cheap - I remember paying around $120 for the card.

Hi Don, welcome! Love the Clemente collection laid out together just like that. Incredible breadth and depth of knowledge here and it looks like your collecting interests are very much in line with a popular majority. Best of luck on the sub. I still need to figure out how and when I am going to break into that part of the hobby so looking forward to your results.

I'm guessing this was the Clemente bread wrapper you referred to in the Yaz thread?
    image
I picked up a complete set of the 6 of these unused a few years back.
  • DJJazzBassDJJazzBass Posts: 129 ✭✭✭
Yes! That looks very familiar. I'll have to dig them out. Probably have 2 of them or so. Great job getting all 6!

Thank you very much. I am working on a 2nd batch of cards to be graded, but not the Clemente cards. I have no interest in selling them, so why bother getting them graded? I may send the '55 & '56 for grading (and protection), but that would be about it.

That bread wrapper is sweet! It mentions a card included inside. Does anybody have any of the City Pride Bread Clemente cards?
    I'd love to see those.

Yep, all 6. They're in a sealed pocket within the wrapper itself, the back of one is sticking out near the bottom of the scan. Easier to see here: Link

Thank you very much for that link. I couldn't find my wrappers yet, so I just bought one of those sets.
While searching, I did find a whole bunch of Clemente 8x10 photos, Pirates yearbooks, and a 1972 Sporting News with Clemente on the cover. Very cool stuff that I totally forgot about.
