Recent pickup.... 1954 Aaron rookie. **GRADE POPPED**

Picked up at a local show. I liked the centering....paid $300. Upper left corner is kinda boogered but still presents nicely.

+1. Gorgeous card, very rare to see the two white side borders with such little tapering on one side, the eye just slides down those borders so evenly! And at that price it's a real score; cannot imagine ever finding a nicer Aaron Rookie for less! You must be enormously pumped, congrats.

He is doing a signing in October that would become a 2,000 card with his auto.

That was a steal at that price! Congrats.

Love the centering on that one~great pickup!

I also second the idea of getting it signed by Aaron.

Beautiful card! Looks like maybe a 4 if you decided to get it graded.

  • Great Card, Great Price. I agree - Get that baby signed. Hank is in his 80's so dont miss out.

Nice addition to your collection. Question. Being Henry is in his 80's and I haven't seen his sig. of late, does it still present well (his auto)? If not, would'nt a "shakey" auto not result in an overly increased value auto. card? Might it detract more than add value? Recently saw some posts of Stan Musial autos. on cards, a Leaf product I believe, he had done w/in a year of his death and they were sadly quite poor. At any rate Good Luck on the Henry auto.

That's a sweet deal. Great looking card, Congrats.

A few general questions; why do people get autos in blue sharpie? Is blue better than black?
Does anybody have details about the hank Aaron auto signing?

Good question. Why does Heritage have autos. in red ink, which are worth more. I know there are less of red ink ones, but wonder why TOPPS chose red ink to be the rarer ones. Do/can you request red ink for autos?Don't see many IP red ink autos for sale on Ebay. Curious.

usually if the card has a facsimile auto it's gonna be in black ink. blue or any other color helps contrast in my eye....

however, never really noticed premiums on red ink autos. interesting!

I have quite a few red ink IP autos for a set that I'm working on. I'm guessing most people just bring a blue or black sharpie with them when getting things signed.

Congrats on a great pick-up. I too love the centering.
  • Blue stands out best against the widest variety of color contrasts and backgrounds, which helps make the autograph the center of the piece. Red can be too light or blend in easily. You, of course, can request either when sending in to a signing - though blue definitely sells best.

There's also this signing in a week. Not sure about September.

I wish the card shows around my house had cards like that for those prices. Very nice!

I agree that blue presents better and has better eye appeal. I once read that Bob Feller refused to sign in black stating that blue was the color of the American League, while black was the National League color. Has anyone else ever heard about that? I found it kinda interesting.

A few years ago I went to a Yogi Berra signing and had my '52 Topps signed. Sparky Lyle was there as well and if you got them both it was only $15.00 more for Sparky. I thought red would look good on his card.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't have the Aaron rookie signed. From what I've seen, the recent Aaron signatures are not of the quality that you would find on items signed five or more years ago. A better option would be to purchase a signed card that has been PSA authenticated.

As for Sharpie colors, I have cards which I got signed with black Sharpies 20+ years ago, and the black definitely has bled a bit over the years. I don't have any scans handy, but I have cards which now have a bit of a halo effect, with the black bleeding into the surrounding area and causing it to yellow.

For that reason, I stick with blue (or would try another non-black color).
