Slab people--is this some kind of old sample slab?

StorkStork Posts: 5,206 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was bidding on some coin or other and noticed this one from the same seller. For a few dollars it seemed an interesting curiosity. Of course I didn't win the other auction, so, not something I would have normally bought (for many reasons), but at $2.99, it's hardly a budget buster.

Anyway, I'm curious, is this some sample slab or some earlier counterfeit?

I totally forgot to check that website...I even looked at it at some point recently enough--it was still in my autofill.

Cool, a sample slab. I was thrown off by the 'authentic' instead of 'sample'. Do people still collect these I wonder???

it's really not a sample and we've posted about it here several times.

it was included in a Scott Travers book/kit about coin collecting - if you search these boards for Scott Travers you'll find the old post.

they sell fairly frequently on ebay for about 10 bucks... although there's one loon who has had one listed for almost a year @ 60.

I guess it was a good price at 2.99 and free shipping 😀. As a medal and mostly non US collector, this was an oddity for me. I don't hang out on this forum regularly enough to know it was so common. So, not really a sample which explains the 'authentic'. Cool, except I have no idea what to do with it now...

For $3 plus S/H, my suggestion is to enjoy that or send it to Broadstruck and make it a "Copper for the Weekend" inclusion.

Why the need to specify wheat reverse? What else could there be?

My thought is since the slabs were in a book aimed at new collectors, it would point out there was more than one type of reverse.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

For a 1928 Lincoln cent? Of course the Lincoln Memorial reverse, but that started in 1959.

True, but some collectors here weren't born when Affirmed won the Triple Crown last, either. It's a wheat cent , for Wheat's sake.
